Hi,
I am facing a peculiar problems,
I am using a Inspiron N5010 laptop & tried installing different light weight OS like Bodhi linux & Xubuntu & Ubuntu.
1) Most for the time, internet is getting connected & disconnected frequently, mainly after the computer is going to sleep.
Reference problem explanation: link
I saw many users facing same problem, I tried all workarounds suggested but nothing worked.
I am sure it is some kind of h/w s/w compatibility problem

2) brightness getting increased or decreased suddenly, automatically

what to know the best light weight OS which will avoid these & is most compatible to my hardware configuration.

detailed Hardware config Specs available
Link

Please help me.
Let me know if any further details are required.
Thanks in advance.

For your problem number 1, you could try this since you have an intel wireless card and it sounds like the same problem you describe and your device list listed as supported by the iwlwifi driver. Basically create a file, for example /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf , and add the following to it:
Code:
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 swcrypto=1
Then reboot and see if it improves your connection.

for that wifi card in theory any linux with kernel 2.6 and above should be Ok

Apart from the kernel there is the none free firmware Ucode which according to INtel latestest is :
iwlwifi-6000g2b-ucode-17.168.5.1.tgz

you could have a look , see what you have mine (slackware) in in /lib/firmware

with specific vendor ID we can get suggestions of os that work for that post output of:

sudo lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

Linux Mint worked out of the box with my iwlwifi - Debian version. Puppy works well with it.

it worked like a charm. I wanted to observe for few days & then confirm.

If Xubuntu works for you, stick to Xubuntu and get the know how Xubuntu works and understand a bit of the Linux basics. Also check out this topic, it has some good resources for learning Linux.

Thanks for the link, will check it out.
But I am not happy with Xubuntu its a bit unstable and lacks speed, doesn't seem to be efficient enough for sacrifice I am making with looks.

You could try Linux Lite or Lubuntu.

CPU: 700MHz processor, RAM: 512mb ram, 1024×768 resolution.

i will download and boot up using ventoy probably tomorrow !

With the wifi problems fixed, and considering your processor is a 64bit i3, you should be able to run any modern, full distro. The HD graphics might not be the greatest, so a lighter desktop might useful such as Mate (Mint, Ubuntu).

@grt i downloaded Linuxliteos and antiX-19.2_x64-full.iso and just did a drag and drop as they are onto a ventoy formated stick.

i'm having problems with internet having previously cancelling broadband expecting to fly abroad and now using an on demand wiki glorified dongle. Linuxliteos wouldn't boot.

Antix did and screen shots show Desktop.I only used it on a live basis , but it does have an ins
con on Desktop if you want to install. Its got firefox web browser so i went to youtube to watch History of
Slackware by ALien Bob. No sound .Although i was using it live and without configuring persistence "installed" pakcages live won't be there on next boot, but that doesn't stop you using then live and in session.

I did two things went to terminal , updated apt and installed pulseaudio . I then found a gui tweaker for sound card, i opted for generic. Sound on youtube then worked. There is no gimp as default but you should be able to get it. . Oh.. my wifi card was recognised and a couple of tweaks to get connected, enter passphrase. Its definitely, use-able navigable and worth a try

Haiku looks pretty lightweight, I wonder if anyone on the forums here has ever used it.

As a long-term Lubuntu user (it's my favorite distro, it screams on modern hardware), I'm not sure that it should be called 'lightweight' anymore. The last truly lightweight Lubuntu was 18.04, which is a LTS (support to 2023). So, it has that going for it.

From there, it has been LXQt, instead of LXDE, and LXQt is not what I'd call a light desktop environment.

As such, I've pretty much stopped suggesting it as a light OS. It's unfortunate. Given the choices today, MATE is probably a better option, so long as you don't add a lot of widgets. I'm not sure what kind of future LXDE is going to have. Hopefully, the community picks up the ball and runs with it but I've not seen anyone making long-term plans to maintain it into the future.

You can still install LXDE and uninstall the other. I have no problems running LXDE on a modern Linux distro.

antiX 19.3 is now out

and initial impressions from a friend of ours is (regarding speed)

WOW

:) :)
