Windows XP laptop won't boot to linux with USB[SOLVED!]

Do you have a Windows XP cd.

If so see if you can boot from it to make certain the CD / DVD drive is working.

Will it be okay if I disconnect my drivers on my computer when doing this, or completely remove?

I'd recommend that you do.

The first link looks workable.

Try Nelson's suggestion about the Windows ISO.

If you don't have a Windows XP ISO, the internet is full of places to download it from. I actually have a copy, but my upload speed is pathetic.

Just some extra information, but not to distract the OP from following Nelson's ideas :) :

1. The HD is a SATA drive (Fujitsu MHW2080BH)

2. A review here gives the specs in a column in the middle

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Vostro-1000-Notebook.6545.0.html

3. 1 GB of RAM, it is going to have to be a very light Distro chosen

4. Dell do have an update to BIOS as recent as June 2020

Good luck

BTW wasn't recommending WUBI-UEFI be tried, as we had established the laptop was not UEFI, just letting Members know it exists. Sorry time was wasted.

Huh... Sata in an XP laptop? Whodathunk that? It came out around 2000 and was very pricey - and not widely used for quite some years after that.

This guy's laptop just keeps getting stranger and stranger.

I actually have seen a few computers from that circa with 40GB and 80GB sata drives in them.

Definitely what we refer to at work as a "Tough Dog" due to being so problematic.

It's time to set that laptop on fire.

what im about to do, guess what when, installed the windows xp 32 bit on the dvd and insert on the vostro, it still says operating system not found lmaooo, this computer is so weird.\
Time to do the caddy method.

Are you absolutely sure that the DVD drive isn't faulty? I have a DVD drive which will no longer read DVDs, but it reads CDs fine.
not sure all i have with me are DVDs, im going to try @KGIII caddy method and see if that works.

That would sure explain a lot of the why nothing is working.

Note that Wiz discovered your HDD is actually SATA and not IDE. That's rather odd on such an old laptop, but he took the time to look it up.

Go and grab Universal USB Installer at pendrivelinux.com/ universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ use this to create your Mint Install USB Drive - once finished go into your BIOS on your Vostro 1000 and change the setting to boot Removable first, then your HD Second - now plug in your newly created USB - now reboot again with thumb drive in and tap the F12 key to bring up boot menu then select USB - hopefully this will work - I also attached a guide on How to make a Linux USB on Windows using Rufus if you want it

@Lord Boltar this seems promising, I haven't tried pen drive linux yet, I'll give it a shot and see if it works which i doubt, because we tried many times with the usb and ends up not working, but lets see.

I don't think Pendrive will work on XP sorry I forgot you are using XP
