Australia - The Land Down Under

The Australian National Anthem......Advance Australia Fair.....
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

girt.....GIRT ??!!....I hear you say/think..!......

Girt
The Unauthorised History of Australia
by David Hunt

Synopsis

Girt. No word could better capture the essence of Australia...
In this hilarious history, David Hunt tells the real story of Australia's past from megafauna to Macquarie ... the cock-ups and curiosities, the forgotten eccentrics and Eureka moments that have made us who we are.
Mark Twain wrote of Australian history: 'It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies ... but they are all true, they all happened.' In Girt, Hunt uncovers these beautiful lies, recounting the strange and ridiculous episodes that conventional histories ignore. The result is surprising, enlightening and side-splittingly funny.
Girt explains the role of the coconut in Australia's only military coup, the Dutch obsession with nailing perfectly good kitchenware to posts, and the settlers' fear of Pemulwuy and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamingcoat.
It introduces us to forgotten heroes like Mary McLoghlin, transported for the typically Irish crime of 'felony of sock'; Patyegarang, the young Eora girl who co-authored the world's most surprising dictionary; and Trim the cat, who beat a French monkey to become the first animal to circumnavigate Australia.
Our nation's beginnings were steeped in the unlikely, the incongruous and the frankly bizarre. Girt restores these stories to their rightful place. Not to read it would be un-Australian.
David Hunt is an unusually tall and handsome man who likes writing his own bios for all the books he has written (one).

Legendary photos, Brian :), gotta show those to Elaine, although it would have been a better taste (sic) to feature a Queensland pub with XXXX on the bunting.

On a more sombre note, this from our National Broadcaster 9 hours ago, a reminder that our land that is girt by sea has severe weather fluctuations.

The video contained therein is worth a look. It is 5 minutes or so, from our Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) with an outlook for the 6 months October 2020 to April 2021.

So, you want to travel around Australia......rent the house out, put the furniture in storage, jump in the campervan (hired or owned)....and just get the hell away from it all. See whats out there...meet people on similar journeys, see things you have never seen.....and live without the schedule that has inevitably become "daily life".....and that includes the 'schedule' imposed by covid19

YES ?....am I ringing the right bells ?......got you dreaming about how much/what you would need ? how you would go about taking care of yourself and those with you...etc etc....

READ ON.

Just so you know...the Australian countryside is littered with
GREY NOMADS

Generally, these people are aged from their 50's and up......but certainly not all of them are.
It is estimated there are around 2500 grey nomads on the roads of Australia at any one time.
While some of them can be grumpy old buggers, not all of them are.......you will find lots of them who are more than willing to share their experiences, both in terms of how to get organised to navigating your way around either a particular state or the entirety of Australia.

Don't ignore them....they have a massive storehouse of knowledge.

And followed by - Brian has already remarked on Australia's official National Anthem.

Here's the Bogans' unofficial Australian National Anthem.

Take it away, Choirboys

How beautiful is this shot of emus taken at Lake Gairdner in South Australia
❤️

Photographer Christian captured the perfect moment the male emu leads the chicks across the lake earlier this year. #Bestof2020
"A male emu leads his young across an immense salt lake after sunset in the Australian outback. After the female lays the eggs, the male sits on the nest and looks after the chicks for up to a year. They cross the salt lakes in search of food on the red granite islands."

Note the hierarchical arrangement.

Probably just about everyone has read, at one stage or another, of the bushfires in Australia in the late spring (Sept Oct Nov) of 2019 and the summer (Dec, Jan Feb) of 2020.

This family calls the tiny town of Mallacoota, home
Mallacoota is on the eastern coast of Victoria.
Mallacoota is a small town in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. At the 2016 census, Mallacoota had a population of 1,063. At holiday times, particularly Easter and Christmas, the population increases by about 8,000.Wikipedia

The mum's name is Cate. Her husband, Mark. They have 3 daughters., five guinea pigs, one rabbit, three dogs, two cats and the five goldfish, horses, and chooks.

Read the story, and if you aren't touched by it, take your own pulse and make sure you are in fact, alive.

Just for a serious subject swing......
Have you heard of Endometriosis ?...commonly referred to as Endo...?

Surrounding tissue can become irritated, eventually developing scar tissue and adhesions — abnormal bands of fibrous tissue that can cause pelvic tissues and organs to stick to each other. Endometriosis can cause pain — sometimes severe — especially during menstrual periods. Fertility problems also may develop.
Endo has become known as one of the worst forms of pain
Men....if your wife/partner/girlfriend complains of pain that just doesn't stop.......find a doctor/specialist who is up to date re endometriosis.

This Australian woman has endo.......

Australian artist Eugenie Lee evokes the chronic pain of endometriosis in high-tech experiential artworks

""

Eugenie Lee has strapped a thick, strange-looking belt, a kind of torture device, to gynaecologist and endocrinologist Dr Natasha Andreadis.

The custom-built haptic device gives the wearer pelvic pain-like sensations, and at first, Dr Andreadis's descriptions of the experience are fairly innocuous: "I'm feeling like my organs, woah, are really getting a deep massage."

But once Lee ratchets up the intensity level, Dr Andreadis says "it's like someone's punching you and they've got spikes on their knuckles".

Dr Andreadis then starts swearing and is lost for words for a moment, before asking: "Do people have to go through this every month? ... [It feels like] ripping, tearing, crazy sharp."

Eugenie's approach may be a bit "out there".....but she sure as hell gets the message across

I put a WOW icon on that, but I'll say it again

WOW

Anybody reading Brian's Thread should invest 3 minutes and 21 seconds to view the video with the doctor wearing the haptic belt.

I will have to get back to the 51 minute podcast another time, but I will.
