In order to the question to be answered precisely, could you specify what are you referring to as "the ribbon", and what desktop environment / window manager setup are you using?

For example, if you want to show the language input in Gnome 3's tray, it's generally already there if you have more than one input available and hidden if you only have one.

I think he is using Linux Mint Cinnamon. Check the previous posts by him. He even showed a screenshot of his desktop here.
