Good afternoon everyone!

SUMMARY:
I've been sadly suffering random full system crashes in my Arch installation since I've first installed it, circa December 2020. Yes its been a very long time... also lots of progress abruptly interrupted... I have a thread in the Arch Linux official forums, but I'm here to create another one in order to wider my range (yes I'm that desperate). The reason is because my vacation is ending and I going to use this laptop for work, and can't simply rely on something that isn't stable at all. And, apparently, I have this masochist love with this distribution (do not judge me).

HARDWARE:
  • Laptop Model: A62 LIV Standard;
  • CPU: Intel i7-10750H (12) @ 5.000GHz;
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile;
  • 32 GB of RAM;
  • 1 500GB SSD;
  • 1 2T HDD;

SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Arch Linux 64 bits;
  • Kernel: 5.9.14-arch2-1;
  • No DM;
  • I3WM (recently removed KDE as a suggestion to help in my issue);
  • Currently just using the dedicated GPU, changed it from a BIOS level (I have no problem in using both, but again, by using just one the crashes are less frequent);
  • Xorg;
  • Grub;

THE ISSUE:
I suffer, randomly, crashes in my system that make me unable to do anything. The screen freezes, I have no access to my mouse nor keyboard, it is impossible to TTY, and it is also impossible to use the magic keys. In other words, all that I can do is use the ignorance ~ hold the power button for 10s~

WHAT I HAVE TRIED UNTIL NOW:
  1. The Display Manager was removed;
  2. The following parameters were added to the boot loader: systemd.unit=multi-user.target nvidia-drm.modeset=1;
  3. "RNG tools" was installed;
  4. The GPU is now starting as soon as possible (Grub parameters);
  5. IWD was disabled (now called by the Network Manager);
  6. Standard X file configuration removed (now using only tweaking specific configurations, such as the DPI);
  7. Minor fixes (simple fixes);
  8. Removed KDE plasma, now using I3WM.
  9. The ram memory was tested with memtester;

Here are some outputs from my last recent crash, yesterday:

Since I switched over to Arch I love the distribution too so I know how you feel, I'm sure on the Arch forums there are plenty of knowledgeable people who can help you. Are those journal logs from right after the crash, I don't see any crashes? Have you tried running the linux-lts kernel or the linux-zen kernel instead of the vanilla kernel, just install them along side the one you currently are using and see what happens?

Hello!

Yes, the logs are indeed from right after the crash. Odd isn't it? By the symptoms presented by the issue it makes me thinks that X may be involved as well, that's why I also posted that logs. If you looked over them, you can tell that the crash counter is in 2 (only 2 for some reason). I've been thinking about using Wayland...

No, I'm not using the LTS kernel, the reason is because the hardware is pretty recently, so I'm not sure if it would be an advantage. But I'll give it a try, anything to make it stop.

I'll have another look at your Xorg.log tomorrow. I did see you use nvidia drivers, last time I checked the support for Wayland with nvidia drivers was still very limited to put it nicely. It's worth a try to see if you notice any changes when booted in the lts kernel, if the problem remains than its probably something to do with Xorg since your journal shows no sign of crashes but it's worth a try I would say.

I don't have any help for the OP, but I did want to comment to point out that this is a good example of how to ask a good question. A ton of well-formatted info, describing the symptoms, describing what they've already tried, great follow-up, etc...

Folks should take a lesson from OP.

The only thing that stands out in your Xorg.0.log is this
Code:

I also have an nvidia card, I checked my own Xorg.log against these nvidia error messages there are no mention of those errors in my logs. Which make me think it might be a driver problem, try removing the nvidia drivers and installing xf86-video-nouveau and see if the crashes remain or disappear. After you get the results of that I would also try enabling your onboard video card and disabling the nvidia card(if that is possible with your setup) and then see if the crashes remain or not. You probably want the nvidia drivers for gaming but I think it's worth just trying this to see if the crashes/freezes disappears by using a different driver or gpu you, you will then at least know where the problem is and can work towards thinking a solution from there.

Hello.

I'm running the long term support Kernel as you said, no much of a difference until the moment. I also enabled the iGPU from a BIOS level, and installed its packages.
Code:
$ pacman -Qs intel
local/intel-ucode 20201118-1
    Microcode update files for Intel CPUs
local/libmfx 20.5.1-1
    Intel Media SDK dispatcher library
local/tbb 2020.3-1
    High level abstract threading library
local/vulkan-intel 20.3.3-1
    Intel's Vulkan mesa driver

And since we are here, take a look at the nvidia packages:
Code:
$ pacman -Qs nvidia
local/egl-wayland 1.1.6-1
    EGLStream-based Wayland external platform
local/lib32-nvidia-utils 460.39-1
    NVIDIA drivers utilities (32-bit)
local/libvdpau 1.4-1
    Nvidia VDPAU library
local/nvidia-lts 1:460.39-3
    NVIDIA drivers for linux-lts
local/nvidia-prime 1.0-4
    NVIDIA Prime Render Offload configuration and utilities
local/nvidia-utils 460.39-1
    NVIDIA drivers utilities
local/nvtop 1.1.0-1
    An htop like monitoring tool for NVIDIA GPUs
local/opencl-nvidia 460.39-1
    OpenCL implemention for NVIDIA
local/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.17-1 (xorg-drivers)
    Open Source 3D acceleration driver for nVidia cards
** Had to add nvidia-prime since now I'm using both gpu's.

Regarding the X logs, more of those lines can be found, now including the new GPU:
Link.

It has been a whole day without any crashes, but I had this behavior before, so I'm still considering that the issue is around. I will report again once I gather useful info, thanks so far.

If your other GPU is intel you will probably also need: xf86-video-intel. Your new xorg.log als mentions it:
Code:
[ 158.297] (EE) Failed to load module "intel" (module does not exist, 0)
Two questions, what's the point of having both the nvidia driver and the nouveau driver installed? And are you planning to test out what I mentioned before about only using the nouveau driver with your nvidia GPU and only your other intel GPU? Will be looking forward to hearing your progress :)

Forgot about this one :p
Already installed it. And I did removed the nvidia-lts driver in order to test the Nouveau one.

I did as you said and tested the Nouveau Drivers. Didn't work well with me mate. For some reason, whenever I tried to any task, any task, the fans sounded like a rocket at launch. And I also noticed that my RAM indicator, available in my I3status, was bugging real hard. It would show stuff like 1000Gib of 27Gib in use... real odd.

I tried the same tasks with the nvidia-lts, and they worked fine. I believe that the nvidia driver is ok. Initially I had removed the iGPU from a BIOS level because it was causing me some hard time with X, now it seems to be gone, somehow... maybe it was because of Plasma.

A lot of errors from my USB keyboard + USB mouse. Looking around I saw other people with this issue, and apparently it is not related to a lag as the log suggest. Still no fix apparently.

So far no crashes in two days, my hope is beginning to shine once again. Let's hope it keeps in the way it is.

It was just a test, that's what it's always useful to try different things and see what results you get to come to a conclusion, although it would have been more helpful if the logs/journal show an actual crash.
It would show stuff like 1000Gib of 27Gib in use... real odd.

So am I understanding correctly that you are running the linux-lts kernel and the normal nvidia(or the nvidia lts?) driver and have your other GPU(intel) disabled in the BIOS and your system is running stable now?

Although I find these errors strange:
Code:
[ 33.416] (EE) libinput: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=3: Failed to create a device for /dev/input/event8
They must be caused by something different than I thought because now that your system seems to be running stable I would have thought them to disappear.

I'm running the linux-tls + nvidia-lts and I'm now using both GPU's. I was using only the dGPU before. I was only using the dGPU because when I was running both of them X would give some headache, however now it appears to be gone... somehow.

I had this behavior before, some days of stability and them out of nowhere a bunch of crashes on the same day. For now I will focus in the errors found in the X log. From what I could gather until now, this logs are related to black screens issues. I haven't experiencecd any black screens until now.

So... I was just playing fallout when my screen decided to bug me. The picture describes the situation better than me:
Glitchy screen.jpg

I still could use my mouse + keyboard. Looking on the X logs, the number of the events seem to be increasing...

Just had another crash. Just like the other times, the journal log does not show anything special. However, look a the amount of activity captured by the X log regarding the nvidia:
X log
Code:
...
[    16.996] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): DFP-0: disconnected
[    16.996] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): DFP-0: Internal DisplayPort
[    16.996] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): DFP-0: 2660.0 MHz maximum pixel clock
...

A lot of the messages above popped up.

UPDATE:
Found someone who had a similar issue here.

Added i915.enable_psr=0 to grub.

Now that I see your screenshot it must really be annoying to have that keep happening! When this happens are you able to switch to a virtual console(ctrl+alt-f3), as in when you are in the virtual console the screen crash/freeze isn't effecting the virtual console? If so can you then try to log in and run dmesg and see if you come across any crashes there or messages about nvidia? When you run dmesg send the output to text file, that way you can view the file after you have restarted your system again.
Code:
sudo dmesg > dmesg.txt
What I would also do is create a live usb with another distribution, boot into the live environment of that other distribution and leave your system on and see if the crashes happen then. If they still happen then the only thing I could then expect that it could be a hardware issue. You could then either still try updating your BIOS/UEFI to see if that helps or go to the store where you bought the laptop, I would do the latter if that is the case so that you don't have chance of screwing up the laptop and they blame it on you and so that they get the laptop in the exact state it is currently causing problems.

Managed to get in touch with the support. They are going to send me another SSD with Windows Installed to see if the issue still occurs. I will report again once I have some results.

So you weren't even able to access a virtual console when the screen crash happens?

No. Nothing worked. No TTY. No Magic Keys, nothing...

The issue that I took a picture was an exception. That was the only time I could move my mouse + keyboard.

How about live booting into a different distribution from a usb drive to see what happens then? I'm actually out of ideas and seems like everyone else on the Arch forums is too since you haven't gotten anymore replies there.

I’ll try it.

Another idea might be to create a simple script that creates a new output file of dmesg every minute or so and for every minute create a different file with a timestamp, so that when you reboot after your screen crashes you can checkout the output of one of the dmesg files. You could either run it from your shell or create a cronjob for it to start from a certain time.
