Having hard time - Video Streaming, Fan Speed, Core Temp Peppermint 10

I m having a real hard time streaming movies from any site with linux tried many different distros
All pretty much the same cpu heats up fast and then fan at high speed highest speed i might add
Had no prob streaming with windows ten fan ran at low est speed you dont even hear it
So if this old dell vostro 3550 32 bit machine could run win 10 no prob why cant i get linux to work
I switched cause i could not stand the forced updates i hated that
So i switched i read all these articles how linux can revive old machines and lots of distros for 32 bit so i thought this is gonna be simple
Well if any one wants to take a stab at this would be greatly appreciated

So a friend gave me this laptop 3 or 4 years ago he upgraded it from win7 to win 10
The monitor would not work anymore so he bought new one and gave this to me
When i first got monitor going i checked stats and it said 32 bitt never dawned on me that he installed wrong os
I i have seen around on this machine a term 86 64 and for some reason my brain only saw the 86
And makes me think 32 bit
So anyways i seen your post late last night went to link u postted and was pleasantly surprised
So proceeded to download and install 64 bit peppermint os
And now i can also install brave browser one of my must haves
And that made me very happy cause i do like linux i see the beauty in it made some other mistakes and was able to fix it in terminal with some help so im impressed with that
But problem persists im running 64 bit peppermint and temp readings are the same

So, does the device feel very hot?

In your browser, as you're using one based on Chromium, open up the settings and disable hardware acceleration.

Also, have you considered cleaning the inside of the device?

It is possible the hard drive is overheating.

I would try running a distro from a 'Live CD' or USB. Perhaps even disconnecting the hard drive, booting the 'Live' .iso disk, and check temperatures.

P.S. I just occurred to me that the system is rather low on the RAM Memory scale.
Perhaps when streaming video the system is hitting the SWAP space of the hard drive a lot.

2 weeks ago and cleaned all dust

and as far as hardware acceleration is concerned yes i always shut that off
Well when the cpu temp rises i feel underneath i guess its not too bad
But the thing that bugs me the most is the fan it goes at its fastest speed like i was playing a game with heavy duty graphics or something like that
And yes i opened it up and cleaned all the dust out 11 years worth im guessing
So i know anything can go wrong with anything like you can drive your car somewhere get out come back an hour latter it does not start it happens
But the thing that i wonder about is it was fine 2 weeks ago with win 10
Im kinda wondering just for experimental purposes if i should install windows to see what happens
I dont want to im digging linux i want to stay i love that i now can choose WHEN I WANT TO INSTALL UPDATES not when my machine tells me i really hate that
So whatever happens with this dell its ok cause its been an awesome warhorse for me and everything will work out like its supposed to

Older Dell computers are notorious for not having sensors to display fan speed as I own several old Dell computers and none display fan speed.
 
Check your BIOS settings thoroughly. Sometimes fan speed controls are included there.

As @Nelson Muntz just said above, lm-sensors is one tool to look at... it includes fancontrol. Another tool specifically for Dell that may help you is i8kutils. Here are a few links to get you started, but you may need to Google for more.

But, seriously, try disabling hardware acceleration in your browser. It sounds counterintuitive, but give it a shot - and then restart the browser to make sure the changes are in effect.

UMMM this one shows me fan speed
fan on this old dell does not run too much actually the thing is everything is fine for surfing viewing websites but as soon as i stream vids she takes off on me fan kicks in high and wont stop for like 5 min after shutting down vid really annoying
But earlier KGIII pointed out my pc was actually 64 bit long story short i installed peppermint 64 bit and it holds i still have the 70 to 74 temp but that reading does not cause the fan to run high cause the cpu temp holds at about 62 and fan goes at about 2900 which is like a whisper
So thats fine i will take that but as im sittin there my brain is wondering about that high temp that i did not have before
But im gonna keep looking into it though

Yes i always do that i actually dont know why i do everyone says to
And i do like having the least amount of things working so that always works for me
But in this instance it does not make a difference being on or off

Well i did take it apart to clean dust
I actually cant confirm if all fans are working the only one i can say for sure is the one on the left
The main intake I thought about the harddrive as well it could be
the thing is everything was fine on win 10 2 weeks ago i know anything can malfunction at any time
And i tried a ton of distro on live usb and here is the funny thing every distro i tried maybe like 20 of them all had different temps for other
Alt workstation other reading was 81 at idle
Linux mint different desktops and flavours all the same other reading was 72 at idle
Zorin at idle 75
mx linux 75 at idle
A whole bunch of lightweight distros they ran good low temp but streaming with those where a nightmare
so many i lost track
The only one to run beautiful was trisquel mate on live usb other temp was in the 50 would go up but thats to be expected fan actually never came on much at all when it did fan ran at 2900 whisper u cant hear it
So last night before i found out i actually had a 64 bit machine yeah im kind of embarrassed about that
I installed trisquell and it did not run the same temps where up not usable
So thats when i installed peppermint 64 bit
Its doing allright as i write this i can stream now but that 70 temp is still there its just one of those things that bugs a guy you know
You see im not to well off i have not payed for a pc in like 20 years
People give me broken not working equipment and i make it go some how i dont really know how i make it go i just do
So at the end of the day this old dell has been a real war horse for me 4 years trouble frree and also for free given to me broken
So if it is the hard drive i guess im gonna have to break out one of the old delll opti plexs in my closet

No it was an updated Firefox
I just installed brave this morning
Still have the 70 reading but it is now holding there cpu 62 does not cause fan to run fast 2 level speed that's ok it's kind of doing alright I guess
Ummmmm I just found out last night I have a 64 bit machine
So all the distros I tested where 32 bit with Firefox
How embarassing for me you have no idea

I did go through the thread and saw you don't have a whole lot of RAM. If possible, you might want to upgrade that. Modern Linux distros can be pretty RAM intensive - especially when you're using a browser. Even the lightest distro out there still doesn't negate the weighty browsers and web sites (unless you use a lightweight browser which probably has limited functionality).

You can try making good use of a swap partition or swapfile. Just remember that swap isn't where the kernel stuffs stuff when it's out of RAM, it's much more complicated than that. It won't make it magical, but it may improve performance.

Another performance increase can be had from changing to an SSD from an HDD. But, that only improves things that have to do with the drive, when the drive itself was the bottleneck. So, read and writes to the drive will be improved. Applications will load faster, the system will start faster, and if you're pumping a lot of data through the browser then it may also help with storing and accessing the browser's temp files ever so slightly - and I do mean slightly.

Yeah started getting so many responses
That I just started answering everyone lost track of who was who I'm 60 this is the first time in my life I have ever registered and asked for PC help

Ok so since installing 64 bit it's going at an acceptable rate
Still have the 70 reading but cpu holding at 62 while streaming through brave so no fan noise it's on just at first level.

About the ram I totally agree with you
It's just that for me taking apart a tower and installing components it's become second nature but a laptop I don't like taking those apart they never go back together for me
You know as long as this one can keep streaming from Amazon like it is right now I'm fine with that
Believe it or not just can't afford to put any money into this old girl
Is swapiness the same as the as swap file or swap partition
Cause I did change swapiness rating
But new to Linux so I'm still feeling my way around finding out Linux tricks
Actually I just checked sensors cause I'm watching chucky
And it actually improved from the last movie last movie that other temo was holding at 70 now it's 63
I did install all updates about 4 hours ago maybe that had some good mojo in it

I was thinking maybe hard drive was the temp problem but now that I just seen the temp drop that gives me a good feeling

That varies. You could do an introduction thread and ask that question.

Me? I used Unix back in the day, being first a DEC and then a Sun shop more than anything else. We used Windows on desktops. I sold my business in 2007 and 'retired' (I suck at retiring) and started using Linux exclusively not all that much later.

We all have varied stories. Some are new, some not so much.

Anyhow, those temps are pretty solid. I'd not worry about any of those. I'd consider this thread more or less wrapped up.

We try to keep the gabbing to a minimum in the support threads (try being the key word) so that those following search engine links can more easily find help. I'd absolutely encourage you to start an introduction thread where you (and the rest of us) can gab until our fingers are sore.
