My Linux Tips site had push-notifications enabled. That's where your browser gets pushed a notification when a new article is published. There were zero subscribers, so I simply removed it. I didn't like the overhead and complexity. I didn't like relying on a third party to push notifications. I just disabled it before anyone did subscribe.

Maybe it'll come back some day, but that's unlikely. Once you reach x-amount of subscribers, you gotta pay for the service. I could probably figure out how to do it without a third party service provider, but I'm really not feeling the urge to put that time and effort into it.

Honestly, I never accept any site to send me push notifications. Even more, I always configure the browser to disallow sites to request permission to send them.

I find them annoying, unneccessary and a part of that "attention economy" where different content providers are competing for us to stay within their site. If your content is great, your visitors will come back and remain.

I think you did well.

Me either and me too. The only one I've ever had it configured for was my own site for testing. I usually have notifications disabled - all notifications. If I want to know something, I look. I don't even have email popup notifications when my email client gets a new email.

My thinking was that someone else may want 'em. It pains me exactly none to get rid of it. Nobody else wanted them and I figured I'd cut it out early before I did end up with a couple of users and having to keep it for legacy reasons, among other things previously mentioned.

If folks want notifications, there's the newsletter. It's old fashioned but one of the reasons why I changed the domain to a .us domain was just so such notifications will make it into their inboxes without being filtered to spam.

I've done some looking around and a feature I can implement is enabling audio.

No, it wouldn't play audio until you specifically ask it to play audio. I definitely don't want auto-playing anything. I'm sure none of you want anything that plays automatically.

The audio would be reading the article. You could click a magic button and it would use text-to-speech to read the article aloud. It'd be pretty sweet for those who have poor vision and those who just want to listen to articles being read.

I kinda doubt that's a very large percentage of site visitors...

It'd be an unobtrusive bar along the bottom of the page. It's a bit of extra work, but not too terrible.

I've prepared a sample page!

Most of my traffic comes from here, linux.org. Search engine traffic is coming along, but most visitors start here. (I don't link the site anywhere else, just here. I should probably change that.)

Anyhow, as most of my traffic comes from here, I'd be interested in your feedback.
