I can't install any linux distro on my laptop. I've tried Arcolinux, Manjaro and Endeavouros, with and without swap, but I always get the same error on boot:
Code:
Starting version 246.3-1-arch
ERROR: device 'UUID=fd2....924' not found. Skipping fsck.
mount: /new_root: can't find UUID=fd2....924.
You are now being dropped into an emergency shell.
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

Is there some special BIOS setup or update to do first ? I haven't found anything in particular apart from the Secure Boot (which I disabled to be able to boot on my USB)

Or is it GRUB which needs some extra configuration ?
Thanks for your help

In your BIOS, do you have something that says "AHCI"? It can be changed to RAID if you see it in there. It's often under a heading of "RST Intel" or maybe the reverse of that "Intel RST".

hi I am not a programmer, but I have come across the uuid not found on other equipment, it indicates a partition not found, suspecting an error on the instalation, I download and burnt a new iso and let it install making its own partition,,, not saying it will work for you, it did for me

I don't have anything called AHCI or Intel RST... Here are some other options I have :

I've tried installing linux at least 6 times with different burnt isos on 2 different USB sticks. I even tried reinstalling Windows but it didn't seem to find any hard drive in the computer...

Have you had an os boot properly before Linux or Windows.
When I first got it (earlier today) I booted it up in windows to check it turned on ok and it seemed to work fine.

Hmm... I'm mostly at a loss here. I've never encountered that error. In the live Linux of your choice, there should be some sort of GUI partition manager - be it GParted or KDE Partition Manager.

What happens if you format the partition manually prior to install? Format it as ext4 and set the boot flag, and then apply it. Then do the installation.

I can access GParted in live environment, or I can manually partition in Calamares.
How do I set the boot flag ? I've never manually done it before.

in gParted its in the sub menu "partition ","manage flags" . When selecting tasks you may need to envoke or get done the tasks, before toogle boot will be available/clickable.

Make the new partition and then right click on it and set the flag.

I'll have you know, I hosed an OS of mine just to make these pics! (It's okay, it was just a virtual machine.)

that leveno its a 64 bit uefi motherboard , right ?

I just installed endeavourOS on wifes laptop that had first Windows 10 , then ElementaryOS then last install endeavour so you need an esp partition and toggle boot for that partition .See my screenshot

so .. if its a uefi system it will look for info in the esp partition , that contains basically uefi bootloaders. If you installed grub , legacy like to mbr , your system will still look for entries listed on esp partition.

From any live OS , you can use for instance fdisk to set up all partitions - thats waht i did , can't remember which flag key is used to toggle boot, from memory think its "a" . Or you can set up all partitions using gparted . gParted is avialble in installer of EndeavourOS- i would encourage you to try EndveavourOS again. I'm basically a Slackware user but looking at 2nd'ry OS. I reasonably Au Fait with Debian and derivatives but , i think there's no turning back now after using pacman to install software auto from repo; manually download and then install manually ..

First you will need a gpt partition table- thats under "device" of menu- create partition table , so you choose that first (not dos) ,then add partitions

Thank you all for your replies, l'll try that when I get home this evening !

One question though @KGIII @captain-sensible, after partitioning in gParted, how do I reinstall linux ? Is it just selecting the drive ? Or can I just do this partitioning directly in calamares ?

The short answer is use partition manager from menu and then click "start the installer"

when i installed EndevourOS i saw it had the calamares installer; a menu came up with different heading s including "partition manager" .

On clicking on "partition manager" basically gParted was evoked ; so yes you can use gParted directly from the calamares installer.

Other tabs include install community editions - basically tweaked versions. Also a tab for update mirrors. I didn't bother with that since "start the installer" gives you 2 options "offline" - i.e no internet required. I chose that one.Once installed i just edited /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist using nano . I cut and past entries of mirrors close to me like Kenya to the top of the list. Entries at top take priority.

This may be of help : https://discovery.endeavouros.com/installation/installation-intro/2021/03/

if you manage to get EndeavourOs or other Arch installed and have used other distro commands this is a great help : https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman/Rosetta

Nothing worked... Contacting Lenovo customer support. I can't even reinstall windows as it doesn't find the hard disk (but can see it and partition it in arcolinux live), so it's probably a hardware fault.
Thank you very much for your help anyways @DexTheDog @captain-sensible @KGIII :)

If it turns out to not be a hardware fault, let us know. We've been known to tirelessly resolve even the most obscure problems.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad with an eMMC internal drive, and some distros flat out will not recognize it. But other distros do. I think every distro you mentioned above is Arch-based, so I would suggest trying something else. I have had good luck with Zorin OS (Ubuntu based), but I would also suggest trying the latest Fedora too.

Zorin also has a new version 16 Beta, if you'd be interested in that. The full release is due around June-July time frame. You can learn more and get it here.
