The other approach is that if your OS does not have what you want, then you might consider going to an OS where you can get it.

No i meant if you play with one Linux iso and it doesn't quite suite you , then you look at other linux distro. I was probably thinking from my perspective - I was using slackware 14.2 it suited my purposes for quite some time but php was lagging behind; i switched to slackware current, that mostly satisfied but i decided to move to Arch.You mean go back to Windows?
So the answer is no to going to those websites and start downloading.
That's a limitation with Linux.
i bit of leg pulling on my part may have been involved !LOL It's too varied per application for me to be able to think of a way to write said article.
I could probably do one just for configure/make/make install - but so many applications want different compiling methods.
