Could I just go to the website and download it?

There are things that are not in the software manager.

This is can't be avoided.

first thing to ask is what are you trying to download/install ? and is it a linux application ?

Linux Mint:
Fastone and the other one is mtPaint
Is Paint for Windows only?

well you can install stuff thats not in your software manager but here is the problem :
I'm surprised @KGIII hasn't dome an article about this yet :^)

So in the good old days you might install stuff via:
configure
make
make install

thing is it was decided that it would be nice if your system knew when software was installed and it was done in an organised way so that should there be a newer version, it was easy to update; should you want to remove it cleanly without wrecking things that could also be done . basically to keep it short none of that happens unless you use the systems software manager either via a gui or command line.

Also if its not from the right repo matching your OS release etc etc , you might compromise your system. If you are say a linux from scratch veteran, thats not a problem. If your not then its prudent to stick to your OS software system installer

The other approach is that if your OS does not have what you want, then you might consider going to an OS where you can get it.

On Arch :
Code:
community/mtpaint 3.50.05-1
Paint program for creating icons and pixel art
[andrew@darkstar:~]$ (10-05 21:52)

following on from what @captain-sensible has posted , you may be able yo run your windows paint using WINE

Bwiz

You mean go back to Windows?

So the answer is no to going to those websites and start downloading.

That's a limitation with Linux.

Hello,
1. oTranscribe is a web app and can be run from most browsers without installing on system
2. Fastone appears to be a windows only program it may be able to run under wine but have not tried it. Or you can have a window install in a virtual machine.
3. mtpaint is available for install in most Debian distros It's in Mint and Ubuntu repositories and can be installed via their package management system. You did not say which Distro your running.

LOL It's too varied per application for me to be able to think of a way to write said article.

I could probably do one just for configure/make/make install - but so many applications want different compiling methods.

Side note: I'm officially applying to join the Lubuntu team. I'm working on my application tonight.

No i meant if you play with one Linux iso and it doesn't quite suite you , then you look at other linux distro. I was probably thinking from my perspective - I was using slackware 14.2 it suited my purposes for quite some time but php was lagging behind; i switched to slackware current, that mostly satisfied but i decided to move to Arch.

Good Luck- We are cheering for you :)

If my understanding is correct, the application is just a mandatory formality. They've been asking me to apply for six or so months, but I wanted to wait until I'd been doing it for a full year. I wanted to know if it was something I was going to stick with, or if it was just me being zealous and eventually getting bored with it.

I'm gonna have some serious Impostor Syndrome. The team members know a ton of stuff compared to me.

Depending what distribution you are after and your requirements you have. For software that isn't in the default repositories you have the following options available:
- Arch based: AUR or Unofficial 3rd-party repositories
- Ubuntu based: PPA's
- Fedora: 3rd-party repositories
- All distributions: Compile it from source, Snaps, Flatpaks and AppImages.
