Expirion 3.1 ISO is Buntu 20.04.2 based distro about 1.7GBs in size
Linux Kernel is 5.4.0-66 Xfce desktop is 4.16, LibreOffice is 7.1.0
Mozilla Firefox is 86.0, Thunderbird is 78.8
qBittorrent 4.3.3, VLC Player 3.0.12, BleachBit 4.2

Expirion 3.2 Is now Released on 19Apr2021 Kernel is now 5.8.0-50 LibreOffice is 7.1.2 plus several internal security updates get the ISO here https://sourceforge.net/projects/expirion-linux/
Here is ubuntu support status below

Aspire-E5-575G:~$ ubuntu-security-status
2263 packages installed, of which:
1693 receive package updates with LTS until 4/2025
470 could receive security updates with ESM Apps until 4/2030
97 packages are no longer available for download

Please to announce an updated version of Expirion – had an issue with some NIC Cards not being recognized there was file in the wrong folder causing the issue (10-globally-managed-devices.conf), it was located in /usr/lib/NetworkManager should have been in folder /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d - that has been corrected. As with the issue Nelson Muntz had (see post 16). I also had the same NIC issue myself when trying to use HDHomeRun, moving this file corrected that as well.

Also upgraded LibreOffice to 7.1.3 and the usual security updates – kernel is now 5.4.0-72 since 5.8 is going to be dead soon.

The full ISO is available for download if anyone wants to give it a spin - released 18May2021

Well here is what I found.

Really nice Linux distro.
However
I was never able to connect to the internet Live or on bare metal.

I've been using Linux for 7 years and that's the first time OOTB that any Linux distro didn't find my wired network adapter.

Anyhow I'll give it a try on another desktop and see if it likes that network adapter.

Kinda disappointing because it really is a nice Linux distro.

Here's the desktop I tried it on.

I had an issue as well here is how to fix it - you need to create a blank file with your text editor and save it as 10-globally-managed-devices.conf - now drop it into /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/ - you will need to do it as root - now reboot and try NIC Card
I relesed an updated ISO on 10 Apr 2021 with the fix it in.

one thing i like about sourceforge is that you can see the Countries where people live who have downloaded it . your top country is USA ; mine was France before it bounced along zero

Let everyone know I have Upgraded Expirion Xfce Desktop once again now has kernel 5.13.0-21 LibreOffice 7.2.2 Firefox-ESR 91.3

I'm grabbing your latest .iso and might have time to go through it tonight.

Thanks I appreciate it

I'll give it a full live-version test, like I do with the daily Lubuntu builds. I should have time... I'm actually way behind schedule today as people wanted to be nice to me today and yesterday. Yesterday was the Marine Corps birthday and today is Veteran's Day (in the US).

But, I should have time - maybe even tonight. If I find bugs, where's your preferred site to report them?

Yep retired Air Force myself - post them here I guess since I do not have a forum per se don't have the time to run one.

When your distro has been out long enough, you could probably ask Rob to create an Expirion sub-forum.

Something to consider, perhaps.

By the way, if you ever want a site and forum (assuming you still host your downloads elsewhere), let me know. I can get you squared away. As you'd be hosting the downloads elsewhere, you're not going to eat all that much bandwidth. So, it really wouldn't cost me anything additional to host your site.

Anyhow, nothing leaps out and says it is broken. I checked for a couple of more common bugs and couldn't trigger them. I didn't do an installation, just a test of the live system. Unlike the last time I tried it, the network connection worked in VirtualBox without any additional configuration. So, that's a plus.

I'll go through the rest as I type this...

Wait, no... I found a bug, but it's upstream.

Open the Task Manager > click on Settings > click on Help - nothing happens. No window appears with the help information. It's likely not something you did, it's likely upstream.

Those are some interesting defaults. I'm not sure I'd use most of that software, but that's not a bug.

Yeah, that's the only bug I'm immediately spotting in a fairly cursory check. I have no idea how long that bug has existed, nor do I know if it presents in other Xfce systems. But, yeah, I notice bugs like that. That's why I test every day!

I did pull the Xfce docs out of the system some were dated - so it was easier to remove them - since it has a link to the online database built in on the About tab - so it is really a bug kind of I made since I pulled it - I guess I could put them back in and grab the latest versions, but did not bother since there is a functioning link on the about tab which takes you right to it - the same way if you go to All Applications then click on About Xfce then click on help it will provide a link to the online database - the online database is the most current - so no help files are included

Yep one version I put out - (10-globally-managed-devices.conf) file was missing in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d but that is what I fixed - I do not use a hard line when I build always use WiFi so I forget to check that end.

also I am planning on leaving it on SourceForge for downloading - the price is right there - free

Ah... Yeah, I'm not sure what I'd suggest in this case. Buttons should work - at least providing some feedback. A button that does nothing is a bug (to me).

I guess I could put them back in and grab the latest versions

That sounds reasonable - unless you can redirect everything to the online help and that sounds tedious to my ears.

I think the simplest solution is to remove it and install htop in it's place has more system info anyway - The updated version that I am doing will sling you to the Online Help- as far as the installed software goes I tried to include some things for most common task like photo editing, audio editing, video editing - different strokes for different folks as they say that is what is great about Linux you can customize it to whatever you want want - while I did recreate the ISO I will have it up in a day on SourceForge - I also went ahead and upgraded Thunderbird to 91.3 as well and threw in the latest updates as well - I did find this Task Manager bug report - https://gitlab.xfce.org/apps/xfce4-taskmanager/-/issues/43

The bug report looks right to me. I could probably go back, start it from the terminal, and then see if it throws errors when I click the help button - but you've likely already got it installed, so it'd be faster for you to check.

Hmm... HTOP is awesome, but (in my opinion) people are going to want a GUI task manager. Though I really do love HTOP. Gnome's System Monitor may have few dependencies, I haven't checked.

It looks like an interesting 'general use' distro, with quite a bit included. Some folks are going to appreciate that. With all the software installed, in kinda reminds me of Endless OS, though this one is much smaller.

Yep it is the same bug that was reported - started it in the terminal and here is result - So I am deffinately going to get rid of it until the bug gets fixed.
(xfce4-taskmanager:50450): Gtk-WARNING **: 13:54:32.630: Content added to the action area of a dialog using header bars
(xfce4-taskmanager:50450): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: 13:54:33.761: invalid cast from 'GtkButton' to 'GtkWindow'
(xfce4-taskmanager:50450): libxfce4ui-CRITICAL **: 13:54:33.761: IA__xfce_dialog_show_help_with_version: assertion 'parent == NULL || GTK_IS_WINDOW (parent)' failed
I did look at Gnome System Monitor and installed only 2 other dependencies needed so no big deal - everything works on that think I will go ahead and add that and get rid of HTOP and XFCE4-Task Manager - Thanks for the suggestion - once I fixed my Dev computer and rebuild a new ISO I will get it uploaded to SourceForge maybe late tonight or tomorrow

Be sure to let us know when you update. I *may* be able to fit in another test. It's always nice to get an extra set of eyeballs on it. I agree with the Gnome System Monitor choice. It's effective, efficient, intuitive, and informative. Can't really ask for much more. Leaving HTOP in wouldn't be a bad idea. It beats TOP by a country mile.
