Was debating between a System 76 laptop, but by the time you add the specs you want the cost is too rich for me.

Really wanted something that marries the software well with the hardware. For about $800 less I insteaded opted for a MacBook Air.

Anyone have a Mac/MacBook?

It may take some time for that marriage to be consummated with Linux, if that is your plan. Currently Linux will not install using a M1 processor (according to this recent article), and you'll have to settle on a virtual machine for awhile. Not a marriage made in heaven, maybe, but I hope you are satisfied with your new machine. Good luck!

I like that color. And you can't beat the look and feel of Linux on Apple hardware.

Several years ago I installed Mint on a 2013 27" iMac. Ended up putting MacOS back on it for my wife's use.

True, but S76 is real close. Once they finished their custom os and may still get one at some point. The MacBook will keep MacOS on it.

Yeah i like the color too! I always wanted one way back from 2009 but wasnt willing to pay the odd now finally more than 10 years later i finally owned one lol

this is an interesting read..

That MacBook Air is a fantastic machine; my only gripe with the M1's is that you can only use one external monitor with it. When I was testing them at work prior to deployment to our users I tried using a Displaylink docking station to use more than one monitor with it, and it was just not a good experience (sluggish/slow response on the external monitors).

I agree. It's amazing. And with the 8 & 8 cores it's pretty close to the Pro. Even if I was doing rather intensive graphics work I'd probably still get the Air. One of my work machines is one model older but it's just slick as snot.

Don't have a use-case for multiple monitors though. I'm sure it will get there with future iterations of the chip.

I got the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, and the Air for my wife. Then I got the 16-inch M1 Pro and that machine is a BEAST. The new M1 Pro/Max chips do support multiple monitors, so from a business sense that is great. At my new company now we've started rolling them out and our developers are really happy with them.

Do you do audio and video work?

The laptop I use at work for MDM management and Configurator 2 is an early 2015 MBA, and I love it. Can't wait to get my hands on my new one.

Do you lug that 16" machine around with you, or is it more a stay in place work machine of sorts?

No, I dont do audio or video, just some light photo editing; these are my personal machines. I used to ride my motorcycle to work with the old school 17-inch MacBook Pro in my backpack, so the weight of these new machines doesnt bother me. At work I also manage our MDM (Jamf Pro) instance and use an iMac Pro. I run a lot of VM's on it when building and testing package deployments. We also just got in our first order of the M1 Pro 16-inch MacBook Pro's, so I'll get to start playing around with it at work maybe this week (we got some snow here in Virginia so I didnt make it in to the office yet).
