I got a good offer for a "Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Development Board Kit 8GB Ram" model, but I've never really used one.
I saw on forums that people use a raspberry pi as a daily driver, and I'm also interesting to try out so then I can use it to do basic tasks like web surfing, little bit programming, watching movies, download torrents, distrohoping ect....
Is this model capable of doing those above tasks without any lags?
Do I have to learn specific raspberry pi coding language things like that? or is someone with a basic computer knowledge capable of using it?
What other things do I have to consider if I'm going to buy this model?
Thanks in advance mates

I use for my daily driver, i surf web, watch youtube, write documents, email , downlaod torrents. Mine is the raspberry pi400 which is basically a keyboard with the raspbery pi built into it! its so much fun, theres no speical raspberry pi code to learn, you can literally buy one unbox it and plug it into your tv and your good to go! you could do programming on it if you want to.

Im not sure if it can do virtual box and run other versions of linux, if it does it can maybe only run rasperbby pi versions . But to be honest ive not looked into virtualization on th pi . I use my old laptop to distro hop around lol . Pi400 is s much fun!

nice setup you got there.
I saw Pi400 later which is cheaper and beautiful than the above mentioned model(8GB version).
Now Im reconsidering to buy a pi400 since it comes with inbuilt keyboard and mouse. Only bummer is it is 4GB while other model is 8GB.
But I think 4GB is more than enough for my expectations.
Do you use a SD card or a SSD?
And how often do you turn off your raspberry pi? Because I want to use this as an internet server

i use the micosd card that came with it (16 gig) with raspbian Os on it , but i also bought a 64 gig usb for some extra storage and keep that plugged in and save things to that. I keep mine on a few hours at a time while i use it through the day and night. It has a power button built into the keyboard but it will also power on usually as soon as it is plugged in.

Ive had so much fun using it its very versatile and you can d so much with them. They also cheap and dont use much power, which is great for a minimalist like me :)

The CPU is a different architecture than you're accustomed to. Instead of AMD64, it's ARM. So, you'll need software compiled to work on that architecture.

I searched on different forums and almost all people say it's okay to leave it on 24/7.
Going buy a raspberry pi tommorrow. I'll leave a review when I receive it. Thank uu

Yeah, i guess I'll be fine with default raspberry os since it comes preloaded with almost all softwares I need to use

There are also other choices. Ubuntu has an RPi image available, for example. I think some of the official flavors also have images available, but I'd have to look. Fedora has an image available. The list of options is steadily increasing.

I've thought about getting a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8.0GB of memory but I can't see it doing anymore than I can already do with my desktop PC.

I guess if ya didn't have a PC a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8.0GB of memory would be an inexpensive way to have a PC.

yeah good call, thatts why i got a raspberry 400 i had only a laptop and was considering geting a beasty pc but wanted a cheaper option , i seen some youtube vids of peeps using as a daily driver so i went out and bought one and i waas quite impressed for £80 to have a fully functionally desktop style computer. Also if something goes wrong with os its very easy to re install it all! ive re installed mine several times trying some different versions of os on it and i have to say the optimized version of rasbian that comes with it works so well

yeah i bet! sadly i have to settle for the 4gig on mine but still does the job well
What a bummer.

I can afford the pi but it never seems to end there's always more to buy and before you know it you got a pile of cash in it.

It would be different if I needed it though.

Actually I don't like gnome like other people do:D so, ubuntu is out of the table for me. Manjaro has a ARM edition. If raspberry os didn't work for me, I'll move to manjaro.Maybe fedora, because ive never used fedora.
Didn't know there's a huge community for raspberry pi until two days ago.
one of my normie friends bought a 1000$ laptop recently just to surf web and create presentations.
If I knew about this back then, I could've save tons of money for them

power consumption and form factor are the main two reasons people buy raspberry pi. Perfect to run a NAS, tor node......

Yeah, I'm not a Gnome fan. I did a quick search and came up with yet another option:

That makes sense and I guess that would be a good enough reason in some counties.

I saw on youtube many people have 4gb model and completely satisfied with it. 4GB is more than enough if you don't do multitasking and run windows 11

thats the beauty of linux tho, you can use old hardware or perhaps not the latest hardware and revive that hardware with a linux distro. running light software on old hardware
