Complicated problem - All linux distros freeze, briefly run sluggish, and some cannot be installed (INFO provided) [Expert needed]

Hi. Though this may sound unlikely, it could be the crazy coincidence that your hard drive went bad between now and the last time you used windows. Might be worth trying a different hard drive, if you can. Or trying running windows on it again for a while and see if it freezes
 


From the screenshots it looks to me your BIOS has a few bugs (Picture 3)" Firmware Bug no firmware region can cover this" I highly doubt AMI will fix this and this is probably caused by ACPI anyway - (Picture 2 & 4) "Segmentation Fault" Segmentation fault is when your system tries to access a page of memory that doesn’t exist. Couple of things to try

At the Grub prompt type "e" to edit
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash modprobe.blacklist=nouveau"

At the end of the "Linux line" (near the bottom), add acpi=off
Then F10 to boot - below is screenshot showing where to add acpi=off

If the above does not work you can always change it back

If all else fails I would recommend changing BIOS to Legacy as @wizardfromoz suggest then reformat your drive and reinstall

I gave it one try with Linux Mint (because my friend told me it's the most stable one) and it worked for a couple of hours and then it froze again. Linux Mint was on Kernel 5.4 with support until April 2025.

So this is hardware problem not kernel or anything else. I am not going to open it up, it's a complicated model anyway.
I give up for this laptop (at least for now) and I will keep it on windows until 2025, then maybe I will give try it again.

Thanks for the help and remember that this was not in vain. Meanwhile I am running for dual boot on my modern PC.

I had the exact same problem with a PC. Asus motherboard and Nvidia GPU. The time past and I can’t even install a new OS, they get stuck in the distro logo or in the in it.

I solved the problem installing a Systemd free distro like Void, MXLinux, Devuan, etc. (Artix in my case).

Give it a try.
 
I would say it's an Nvidia problem. most distros have a way to install nvidia drivers.
You might want to give PClinuxOS a try it comes with Nvidia drivers already installed. And may work for you.
In Kubuntu you can go to driver manager and install them from there.

I've had similar issues with NIVIDIA cards. The downloading and installing the drivers from their site has fixed the issues every time.

I will also try this. I've seen in Live that you can actually double click the .run driver from nvidia - could I do it like that? I am not good with terminal.
I'm not sure if a double click on the .run driver will make it run.
Download the driver and try it.
 
If you down load the driver from Nvidia you most likely wiill have to run it in a terminal. It would look something like this
1. cd to folder where you downloaded the driver.
2. Then something like this

I tried Artix(runit) and PClinuxOS but they too freeze in Live. I used multiple flashdrives and multiple usb ports. So systemd would not be the problem. Indeed I saw that something inside it is happening, it's warming a little and the fans go high - most likely is the Nvidia because on windows the laptop stays around 37-43 C all the time.
I am going to give it another try with Pop_OS! and running this command:
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-510.54.run
Because I've heard that Pop_OS! is the most Nvidia friendly distro...

Did you install the Nvidia driver while the live mode were running in Artix?

1.- sudo pacman -Syu (update OS)
2.- sudo pacman -S nvidia (Nvidia driver)

Artix is not systemd .. therefore I guess sudo commands won't work? I did not install nvidia, I was on in live mode when it got stuck.
I mean, for example in Pop_OS! (which is gnome) it would not allow me to update or install anything in the terminal but I had no issues with doing it on Manjaro Gnome (minimal_lts). I also tried again Manjaro KDE (minimal_lts).
Today I haven't had any crash or sluggish movement in live (i only tried Live). It is true that it got a little bit hotter on Pop_OS! like 44-46 C degrees while on the other it reached a maximum of 41 - and in all these cases I just did simple things 3-4 programs opened like Files, 1-2 tabs of mozilla, pamac, terminal.
I will most likely go for a dual boot with a reasonable partition for testing as bare metal acts differently. However, I keep my hopes restrained as Linux Mint seemed promising. Indeed it seems more like an Nvidia thing, once I get a distro installed I'll update immediately video card and everything else and then go for Optimus and try to keep in on integrated.

from your manjaro,can you install inxi [should be in your distribution repository]
and run from terminal inxi -Fnxxz and copy/paste the results back [I will need a clearer copy than a photograph]
 
I have a NVIDIA 940MX very similar to your 920MX - when I used the 495 drivers I had received some freezing or hangs, but I rolled back to the 470 Drivers and my issues went away - I have not tried the 510 Drivers

So there was something in the 495 drivers that my 940MX did not like or the 495 drivers were not completely compatible with the kernel - I did not figure out why this was happening - just when I rolled the drivers to 470 it worked, so I am staying with what works

That's what I try to tell people about the new nVidia drivers -- the latest ain't the greatest -- avoid 510 and go with the original for the card!

I understand you guys, but how do I roll back to one specific nvidia version. How do I know which one is the best?
And how do I keep it from updating itself to newer versions? Yes please, I also want to know if there is an Intel problem :)

I was thinking that he may try disabling MSI. Though Linux kernel supports MSI for several years now, I am thinking there is a wrong implementation of MSI from some hardware manufacturer which may lead to the PCIe errors, which is more of an annoyance then anything else

You need to edit the grub configuration and make the

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line look like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pci=nomsi pci=noaer"

Update grub and reboot the system:
