i want to know what version of linux would be best for my system

side note the title of this post is what my system is so the question of what is my system is null and void

What do you want to do with it or use it for?

Your 2009 Athlon with the 4gb ram is capable of running any distribution you choose,, just download say 6 different distributions each with different desktops and see which you like the best, the mid-weight builds [MX, Peppermint, Debian stable with non-free drivers, linux-lite, Experian] are just a few you could try, that would be slightly less exacting on your box.
We cannot choose for you, it is what you like the look and feel of, the best, and what works for you.

mine is actually the 2010 model originally only had 2 gig of ram but thank you my preferred distro is mint but ive wanted to use ubuntu but so far I'm having issues getting the live disk to work something about missing headers so i figured throw my specs up and ask

64 bit steam games like leaf blower revolution and Netflix mostly also herd some where ubuntu could backend its way into the xbox app so i figured ask questions and figure out the best option from there
 
I's say go with lubuntu LTS, then. It's just a lighter-weight ubuntu that'll run better on older machines with less RAM. MX or antiX would be good, but you mentioned looking into ubuntu.

It first came out in 2009, I was using the Athlon 2x 3000 [2007]with 4 GB up to last year when the power supply went wonky and took out the motherboard and 2 of my 4 drives, had that not happened I would still be using it, yes it will run Mint and Ubuntu, but a lighter build will run a tad quicker.

@wolfthump , as mentioned, 4 GB RAM will run any Linux distro, but as the minimum system requirements approach or exceed 2 GB, performance may appear sluggish on some.

If your preference is for a lightweight distro, Wikipedia have a list here

If you dedicate a 32 GB or 64 GB USB stick to the task, you could burn 10 or more .iso's to it (multiboot) and try them out from their Live environment, and also establish whether printers, video, sound, and wifi work OK.
