Huge Mint fan here.
I experienced screen tearing issues after waking up my computer from sleep. Then, as a solution, I was trying to install proprietary nvidia drivers in my LMDE 5 setup and so far, everything I tried was a fail.
First I tried to install drivers from synaptcs.
Then, tried downloading and installing official drivers from Nvidia.
Then, tried to install Drivers Manager which isn't included in LMDE 5 (I visited Linux Mint Github page, but I couldn't find how to install Drivers Manager on LMDE)
Now I am ready to apply for the closest mental asylum after three sleepless nights figuring out how to install proprietary drivers on linux.

It is very is to install drivers on normal Linux Mint because of Drivers Manager, but for some reason, but it has not been included in LMDE which is a bummer. I love the idea behind LMDE, so can someone guide me to how to install these drivers? TIA

Code:
$ nvidia-detect
Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] [10de:0a65] (rev a2)

Checking card: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)
Your card is only supported by the 340 legacy drivers series, which is only available up to buster.

Then I added Buster repositories

Code:
sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list

and updated the system.

If it helps,
Code:
$ inxi -r
Repos:
  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list
  1: deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main contrib non-free
  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
1: deb http://packages.linuxmint.com elsie main upstream import backport #id:linuxmint_main
  2: deb https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free
  3: deb https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-updates main contrib non-free
  4: deb http://security.debian.org bullseye-security main contrib non-free
  5: deb https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports main contrib non-free

I have that very card along with other Nvidia cards from that circa.
Unfortunately anything with a Linux Kernel newer than 5.4xx ain't gonna happen.

Been there done that and spent countless hours N days N nights ripping hair out and cussing and praying and no joy.

If you ain't got a fairly recent but not to recent Nvidia card than Nvidia proprietary drivers and Linux is a no go.

This is based from my own personal experience.

So, there's no way around to install them on LMDE?
Heartbreaking to hear this after wasting days on this matter. What if I install Normal Linux Mint (Ubuntu based) and install drivers using built in Drivers Manager?

Not using LMDE 5 which uses the 5.10.xx kernel.

The Nvidia proprietary driver you need is the 340.108 and the 5.4.xx LTS kernel was the last kernel that supports that driver.

If you want the Nvidia proprietary driver Linux Mint 20 versions and Linux Lite still run the 5.4.xx kernel.

So yes to Linux Mint standard versions and Linux Lite versions.

Ubuntu 20.04 default kernel installs 5.4.xx however updates to the later HWE stack kernel however you could lock down the default 5.4.xx kernel prior to installing updates.

Damn right it's disappointing like you I've spent major time trying to get the Nvidia proprietary driver to work.

Don't know who to hold at fault on this.
I'm leaning towards the developers.

You can get the drivers directly from the nVidia site. A little more of a pain to install that way, but it works.

You may be able to get them from sid providing sid still works with bullseye

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian sid main non-free
I tried, but still the same result. And also, on debian documentation web page, it is mentioned that the use of the 340 series driver is discouraged if it is not included in Debian stable releases due to "serious unfixable security vulnerabilities".

Installed Ubuntu Based LM. Everything works fine now. Thanks for your support gentlemen. I will send a report to LMDE developers about this issue.
