I love the Linux desktop, but that doesn't mean I don't see its problems all too well.

I might as well put my opinion in here also.
Without a lot of verbiage. I think what we know to day as the Desktop or Laptop will give way to a mobile device maybe a phone or maybe not that will be able to dock to a larger screen and keyboard at home or work but on which we will carry the basic info we each need. It will be a high-bred model of local storage and cloud computing of some sort. But the Desktop as we know it today will be gone just as I'll be gone by then :) I might add that distros as we now know them will be gone for the most part.

You do the math what we DON'T have that the Windows users do.
A bunch of bloat? Performance and testing software that clogs up the Start menu, but that no one really uses.

The first thing that comes to mind is the nvidia driver. The Windows driver is 500MB when packed, the linux driver is 50MB when installed. You do the math what we DON'T have that the Windows users do. Our driver is literally naked regarding features, whereas the only thing they don't have (yet) is direct access to Fascistbook through GeForce Experience.
Also, drivers for steering wheels, drivers for keyboards (perfect example is A4Tech G800V, altough it's not exactly a driver, it's a software to program the special keys), drivers for ALL USB Bluetooth adapters, drivers AND software for CCTV and for regular user cameras...
To be fair, Linux drivers are usually small. Any drivers are. 50MB is actually quite big. I imagine nVidia ships extras with Windows, things like GeForce Experience. That's probably most of the disparity.

Steering wheels a problem? Maybe to setup, but they work. I'll agree that Linux HID support needs an overhaul. I had my triggers detected as axes, for example. But these are problems a user can fix if one puts in the effort. For me, it took less than 10 min to have a fully functional XB control w/o xboxdrv driver. 3.5mm audio jack's the only thing that won't work, but that can't be fixed as the hardware isn't even visible -- not that there's any point on a PC where you've got a BT headset already.

I'll admit that I dunno about the keyboard, but with my gaming mouse (which I mainly use for graphics, lol) did not have native support for programmable buttons. Solution? USB passthrough in a VM to run the mapping driver/software. Then WINE supported it. Then I found some weird homebrew software. Then I found a native linux software in Sid and it didn't need any Sid-dependencies, so I pulled it into Stable (this is not FrankenDebian, BTW). Now I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this is the same for special keyboards (like gaming ones) where there are programmable keys. Actually, given how far gaming mouse support is, you may wanna revisit the native option for your keyboard. There tend to be "universal" solutions kicking about. Usually for these, check the AUR no matter your distro since you can always find the upstream code and build it for your system (check your repos online, too, you may get lucky and find something in unstable with all stable dependencies).

BT adaptors? I have never had an issue with any laptop built-ins or my PC dongle (granted that boasted Linux support. But these days the mainline kernel supports almost all BT OOTB).

You finally got me on CCTV camera since I come from an era of analogue capture cards, so IDK. What I will say is that they may be useable as regular cameras. Which seques me into my next point...

User cameras are mostly supported. Hell, I can even use my phone as webcam using Droidcam, so, yeah.

I'm not saying there aren't lightyears to go. In Windows, everything plugs in and just "works" (mostly, lol). But credit where due, we have kernel devs slaving their butts off (mainly for Google, not us, but still) and people writing independent drivers and code for peripherals all the time -- and these peops are doing it as a labour of love.

PS: Please try USB passthrough to a VM or installing the G800V software in WINE (pretty sure you can get that bare metal access as my XB control appears in WINE as two HIDs, one is the system abstracted one, the other is metal I can poke feedback with). Good luck.

Don't call everything you dislike "facist" -- this seems the trend with young people. FB doesn't force its rules on you or opress you or silence your free speech (controlling what you say on their private platform does not infringe your First Amendment rights; they can enforce their own rules on their private -- not public -- platform). Nobody forces you to use FB and you won't die w/o it. I don't have any social media accounts and I'm better for it. That aside, this forum is apolitical, so it's better to refrain from this kind of rhetoric (not saying never make a joke; I found yours funny, albeit a little innacurate, and a witty play on FB's name and despicable behaviour -- again, why I don't use social media -- but these are dangerous topics for this forum and I should know as I stepped on a landmine myself in my first week and all I said was that democracy was an illusion). So just a heads up.

And yet Linux outperforms Windows in some games. I guess it depends on the distro. But I have a lot more than 50MB here.

The driver alone is over 50MB here.

I already tried it with wine - it doesn't detect the keyboard AT ALL! Probably because it's looking for a hidden letter for that device (on Windows all devices are assigned with a letter, it just doesn't show up in the regular list of devices) and there are no letters in linux. IDK how to do that passthrough in a VM. The last time I tried VMWare it told me I didn't have enough memory for the VM (ROFL), considering I have 32GB RAM and I had dedicated 8GB RAM to the VM, so ever since I'm using VirtualBox which probably doesn't have this feature "passthrough". Even if it does have it, IDK how to enable it.

lsusb and you should be able to tell which is your keyboard. Use -t to view details of bus and port. It does not show up with a letter on any OS, it has an id. Windows may show you a letter, IDK, coz none of my keyboards had letters, they were called generic P 'n P keyboard. So not sure what you mean there. Anyway, try posting the outputs of:
Code:
lsusb
lsusb -t
dmesg | grep usb
and what distro you're using IF the following isn't of use:
So, AFAIK, Virtual Box has passthrough. I'm just grabbing a link off the internet:
https://www.eltima.com/article/virtualbox-usb-passthrough/

As for Fascistbook,
I call it that way for a reason. Before I left it for good, I had 65 30-day bans on it, solely for stating "I'm an atheist" in posts. Add to that the fact that memes with open racism and hatred remained untouched for years, even after many reports, whereas anything and anyone antireligious was banned and many atheist groups were deleted because they were "dangerous entities". The final drop, after which I decided to leave Fascistbook for good, came after I uploaded a picture of the most beautiful woman on the planet Melissa Benoist and Fascistbook banned me for uploading "nudity and sexual activity"!

<> Pictures removed. Really, I see you joined 2019, you should know better. At least post heavily-censored versions, especially of the first </>
That's bad if what you say happened. I disagree with all censorship, but consider:
1. Their house, their rules. Nobody forces you to join.
2. As I said, stop calling things "Facism" by merit of disagreement.
3. You were banned 65 times. Maybe there's a common thread and maybe your accont was already flagged. Algorithms aren't perfect. That said, 65 times? And you weren't perma-banned?
4. Again on point #1 and #3, after the third ban, you shoulda realised your behaviour was deemed wrong and decisted. You knew the rules, you broke them. They may not be fair in your view, but they're Mark Mother Zucker's rules all the same. It is Zuck the $(rhyme "duck")'s backyard. You don't get to come into someone else's house and assert your morals, lest you errode the very freedom of speech and belief that allows you your own opinions (and to vocalise them). The free speech dichotomy-paradox: I have a right to an opinion and you have a right to disagree, but if you assert that I don't have a right to my opinion, you also forgo your right to assert that I should not have my right to freedom of speech.
In closing, I think we should put this to bed. Linux.org is, as I've explained, not a place for politics. So, I'm out. If you want to chat privately, that's fine, but I tend not to check DMs for days sometimes, so be patient.

Finally, I'm afraid I will have to report those images you posted. I'm afraid you did cross the line and it's up to the mods how to handle this. In the meantime, you could delete them from view before Google caches this page.
(actually, I see @KGIII online: maybe you could do a quick mod-edit?)

Take it to PM or to another site you two. I just edited out an entire chunk, rather than try to fix it.

Thanks. This is not really the site for that discussion, but I don't care if you do it in PMs unless it means I get reports to deal with.

Putting it in spoiler tags doesn't mean you can skirt the rules.

Heck, the thread has run its course and is not really getting useful comments. It should probably be locked to just sorta nudge folks back in the right direction.
