Hello there,

It's a pleasure to be apart of the Linux community. I just installed Linux mint yesterday and this is my first time ever using linux. I appreciate anyone who can help me resolve my issue.

I have updated everything and am currently up to date. The issue I am facing is when I put my laptop to sleep or suspended by closing the laptop. The laptop does not wake back up or I should say I am stuck on a black screen & I have to fully shutdown and restart in order to see everything again. I took a look at This thread to see if this could help me resolve the issue.

But this was instructed for ubuntu as a first timer I do not know if the same approach would work. I appreciate the help.

Thank you

Yes, the same approach is safe. Linux mint is based on Ubuntu

Having said that, it is always wise to have Timeshift set up and a snapshot saved to an external drive.

Thee result will vary with the brand etc etc of Laptop....but.....I find with my wifes laptop that setting the power options for 'turn off screen when active for' to say 20 minutes (or whatever) and also setting 'Suspend when inactive for '....to Never

,,,,achieves the desired effect

So....the screen goes black after 20 minutes....if she closes the laptop it turns the screen off......and re awakens when the laptop is reopened.

Hey how do I transfer the snapshot to my USB. I tried moving it and I was getting an error some files couldn't be moved because they are read only. When I changed location to usb it said this does not have a Linux partition. I'm not sure how to make a partition on linux.

I also do have the power options on never the only thing I have is when I close my laptop it suspends. My laptop has a Intel (R) Core i7-4700 cpu 2.40GHz if that helps.

Your usb will need to be big enough....probably upwards of 32GB....possibly 64GB+..it would also need to be formatted as ext4. (an external hard drive is preferable.)
I keep 3 snapshots at any one time, 2 x on demand + 1 x boot ....and they consume around 50GB.....but my install is fairly small...not many apps added on.

The following should be enough to get you started with Timeshift

Open Timeshift, and select SETTINGS

Settings...select RSYNC

Location...select where you will store the snapshot/s (external hard drive is preferable)
be aware that a single snapshot can take up to 30-40 GB...especially as you add more apps from the repository

Schedule...if you have a drive with plenty of space you can elect to save several snapshots.....or just keep one or two...

Users...Include All

Filters...under the + icon select both lines

Thats enough....go back to main screen of Timeshift, and select Create

grab a coffee.....5 minutes approx

Right I did all that & it let me. After runing these commands
Sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Nothing has changed and I still get stuck on a black screen when it wakes up.

probably time to look at the next post down....kernels...

Did you make an encrypted installation?
No.

I wound up figuring out that I had to update the kernel and that fixed the issue.

Mint installs with 5.4.0 generic I needed tp update to 5.15.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the help.

It's good that you came back to say what happened and how you resolved the problem. I've noticed that some linux newbies never do that. Like this user I tried to help 10 days ago in the Ubuntu section but he never came back to say whether my ideas fixed his problem.
