It's a rambling, mindless post that asks for some commentary, feedback, or fun...

See, I'm quitting smoking (doing fine, thanks) and one of the motivators is the timeline of events one experiences when quitting smoking.

So, this article explores, invites you to explore really, a timeline of events one experiences when quitting *Windows*.

It seemed like a good idea for an article at the time.

Also, I mistakenly pushed "Publish" on this article. That has been fixed. One might think I'd be able to do this flawlessly by now. One might be wrong.

What a coincidense! I gave up Windows just a few days ago (on July, 14th) bc I got sick of all the restrictions. You can't fully disable the antivirus, you have no full control over your own computer, it keeps deleting open source things I've been using for 7 years cross-platformally without a single problem... On Crapindows 11 you can disable 99% of the antivirus except for that idiotic "Antimalware" process (the same process on Crap 10 that deletes anything it doesn't like) but you can't set a default program for the most commonly used file formats such as JPG, PNG and so on bc the "Browse" button in the file properties is missing and nothing you do brings it back... Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 both enter an endless reboot loop once you install the video driver - the very same driver they used to work with flawlessly 2 years ago. I spent 2 weeks trying to make these damn Crapindowses work, so that I can play 3 games but eventually gave up - it's freaking impossible. And I suspect 7, 8 and 8.1 have pre-programmed ageing which prevents them from being used nowadays - all to force you to install Crapindows 10 and 11.
So 4 days ago I kicked Windows in the butt and everything Windows related. I only left a few programs I need most often. I deleted all the ISO files I had, all the activators, 90% of the programs and drivers I had. I even converted all the storages to ext4. I simply had enough of the restrictions of Micro$hit! If they think that by restricting my rights on my own computer and adding the ridiculous WSL will keep me using their OS, they're deeply mistaken! The person who will give me orders what and how to happen on my own computer hasn't been born yet!

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention - the stupid Crapindows had messed up on of my storages when converting it to GPT. Somehow that storage, after Crapindows' intervention, had become like this: the large partition meant for games had remained MBR and the small partition meant for Crapindows had become GPT. Which Clonezilla told me about when I tried to create a backup of the Microcrap's product... Fortunately GParted fixed it.

Are you having any withdrawal symptoms or cravings?
Not for the moment. I do wanna play a game or two and I'm trying to make them work in Linux. One of the games is "almost there" though. But I don't have time to try the results right now, that will happen in 4-5 days. The rest of the games - I can definitely live without them. :) The games I play the most have native linux editions and their windows editions work flawlessly in linux, so I'm not worried that I would miss any of them.

Btw, look what post I just found on ProtonDB. Who needs Crapindows anyway? :D

Well, stick with it and I'm sure you'll be free of any desire to go back.

I have no use for Windows. so I'm well past any point where I'd return as it being my main OS. Alas, I am going to have to get a Windows laptop for some audio-related activities.

Stucked with few very old printers, scanners, GPS (Garmin offroad) ... I have no choice but to run them in Virtualbox.
My Linux is not good enough to write my own drivers.
Simple Scan does not cut it for me.

Linux has been my main OS for 6 years, Windows was just for playing a few games that won't run or run poorly on Linux - World of Tanks, World of Warships, GTA 5 and WOW. But I can live without all of these. And I'm sure I won't have the desire to go back to Windows, it's enough to just remember all the nerves I wasted on it to make me give up even trying it again, LOL

I have some guitar amps that either won't work with Linux or have limited functionality unless I use Windows. So, I'm going to have to face that soon(ish). I haven't done anything about it so far, but I'll eventually want to use them to capacity.

I haven't touched Windows since Vista... So, it has been a while.

I switched to Linux full-time just a few days ago, and I have no real reason to look back, too much to lose for too little to gain by switching back to Windows, which I used it for 26 years.

Linux does things differently, that is for sure, and there is definitely things and habits that I am unlearning over time, but it is an enjoyable experience.

Commented on your article.

In your analogy, Linux replaced Windows. What is replacing your smoking habit?

I'm a "boring" type of person. Not a lot of vices. I don't drink, smoke, or do any other things of that kind, so dealing with the difficulty of breaking such habits isn't something I've ever had to face. I can't tell you honestly I understand your position. But I can cheer you on and say "All the power to you, you've got this!"

Life Savers - except the disgusting raspberry ones. I've got like a hundred of those in a bowl to throw away when all is said and done.

I've never had any desire to go back to windwoes ever in the last 7 years...giving microsuck the flick was the best thing I ever did.

I don't care how Microsoft runs its business or what Microsoft does.

Not into the Microsoft / Bill Gates politics that most Linux users seem to be into.

As for Windows OSs never had any complaints or issues with any of them all worked without problems on my computers.

Didn't care for Windows 8.0 / 8.1, Windows 10 is okay and hopefully will be the last Windows OS in our house.

The Wife may wind up getting a Windows 11 computer as she ain't real impressed with Linux but we will wait and see how that turns out.

IDK about your house but it certainly won't be the last garbage in general bc Microshit announced a few days ago they're killing Win10 in October 2025. they should have killed it on the day they released it, if you ask me, but nvm. :D Which I'm both happy to hear and not so happy to hear bc Win11 is ever worse garbage and if the rumors of them working on Win12, it's gonna be worse than (10+11) squared.

some serious drafting software run only on windows and I have not seen anyone run them on wine. anyone send me references on virtualbox GPU pass-through it would be a little step forward.
And there's a windows 10 Lite available on archive.org I wonder how much "clean" that installation is. but it's windows without any bloat. I want to know what other fellow linux users think about it.

@pedro.de.marco there's also some sources that provide manual ways or even tools to de-bloat it yourself. Check Chris Titus Tech Youtube channel, as he publishes one tool for that job and has some links as well. I personally don't debloat Windows if I'm using it.

I am playing so little games these days, none of them suffering from the "mandatory malware anti-cheat installation" of some multiplayer games, that I made the ultimate switch and no longer have a native Windows installation in any of my computers. Just a VM in case my parents need support and I can't remember how to do X or Y.

All my computers are running Fedora now.

Chris Titus Tech is very informative. I saw his vid criticism of ubuntu last week. thank you very much. That scene you said : don't remember how to do X or Y, same happens here :D

, I'm quitting smoking (
I hope you succeed, i have been failing to give up for the last year. As for windows as my daily drive, that had a flying lesson and no withdrawal symptoms ever came

I have to use Windoze for work, but at home, I haven't used Windoze for over 10 years. My wife has one, but I only touch it when 1) something goes wrong (which is a lot) and 2) when it tax time (Begging for a Linux version of turbo tax).
The last thing I did on a windoze box was play a couple of flight simulators.

As far as quitting smoking, I did in 2007. It was the middle of December, I was sitting on the couch hackin' up heapin' helpin's of lung butter, when I said to myself... Self!!! is this what you want to be doing, how you want to feel? Is this the road you want to be taking? When I asked my self those questions, there were some superlatives in there that were definitely not PG rated. :) So... On December 31st at 11:57 I lit my last smoke, cheated into the new year, put out the butt and haven't had a one since.

For me it was easy. For two reasons,
1: I was sick and tired of coughing my insides out.
2: And most importantly, my mind was made up!
I can be quite stubborn when I want to be. With those two things on my mind, it made quitting so much easier.

Good Luck Sir!!! Just keep the goal in mind!!!
