Dear Fellow Travelers,
I have an older Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner. I have a driver that used to work for it, but now it doesn't. This happened some years ago. I vaguely remembering seeing some forum post about how to fix this, but can´t find it. Can anyone help. I believe tmaybe he newer versions of Ubuntu made some change so the driver couldn't find the scanner. I am not very skilled with the Terminal, so please give me complete directions.
Yours hopefully,
Joe

Thank you, forester, but that got me to a "page not found". Nevertheless, I found a driver elsewhere, so I think I can mark this thread closed.

@Dr. Joe ....the link in @forester's post above works

You may have other problems if you cannot open that link easily.

Linuxorg does not mark threads as 'closed'....unless that is done by a moderator or Admin.

This thread could be marked as solved by yourself, By editing the title to show 'Solved........, but you have not shown the source of the driver.

Get the latest driver (2019) direct from Epson. The drivers are available in .deb, .rpm, and tar.gz (source). The driver in @forester's link is older (2007).

Expanding the "More..." link in the Product Name listing will confirm this driver includes the Perfection 4990.

After clicking the Accept button, download the iscan_man_e.pdf for instructions in English, or iscan_man_j.pdf for instructions in Japanese. Reading instructions is highly recommended.

Thanks, everybody. I am most grateful. When I tried the link provided by @forester I get the attached, repeatedly. I tried getting it direct from Epson and still have not made that work, but will try again with the info from @Old Tom Bombadil . I was able to purchase a good functioning driver from Hamrick, so am in business, but I wish I could have done it a simpler and less expensive way (although the cost is not that significant in the long run).
Yours Gratefully,
Joe

Dear Friends,
For whatever it is worth, I downloaded the driver from Epson again, got it installed through the terminal, but when I try to open image scan it can't find the scanner, even though it is fully connected and turned on available to other drivers. I am confused. Not important, as I can use the scanner, but frustrating not to be able to do it the "right" way.

So this is not solved? Why'd you want to close the thread if it's not solved?!?

LOL I'll fix it.

now this is guaranteed to work, open the window fully, pick up printer and hurl at the open window, this will permanently fix the problem, then you can buy a Linux compatible printer

It's solved, really, but people keep asking me questions and offering more advice.
I'm sorry that you had to pay money to Hamrick... but as the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Enjoy the scanner now while it still works. I once had one like it (maybe the exact model, but I don't remember)... and it has long since hit the electronics recycle bin, as @Brickwizard suggests.

The instructions on Epson's website are complex, so that may explain why you had trouble using their driver. But I would still always recommend to anyone that they get needed drivers from OEM's when available, instead of from 3rd party vendors, even free vendors. That would be "doing it the right way," in my opinion, even if it means learning to compile the driver from source code.
