Is It Possible to Jailbreak a Ring Doorbell?

My neighbor across the street recently bought one of these because he wanted to keep an eye on his packages from amazon, and his wife wanted to feel safe when she's home alone with the kids. When we were talking about it, I politely mentioned that the data it collects goes right to Ring's servers, and because it uses proprietary software, it becomes spyware and an invasion of my privacy. I know Ring does have an end-to-end encryption feature (which I'm sure he didn't bother turning on because he most-likely didn't know it existed), but being that I don't know if it's truly end-to-end encrypted (it probably has a backdoor in it), I'm wondering if its possible for him to modify the doorbell itself to where he can connect it to some unused PC server?

I'd be more concerned with Ring's uploads being (often) automatically accessible to law enforcement.

I don't tend to break the law, but I'm worried about the implications that has.

I also don't live anywhere that the Ring would actually be valuable. I'm really remote.

But... I don't want a neighbor being rounded up because they chose to protest and that protest was 'wrong-think'. I'll avoid politics but we can all imagine a situation where that could happen, regardless of what positions you hold.

So, the simple choice is to not own a Ring.

Hacked or not, that might be something worth considering. They're returnable, or cheap enough to consider it an error in your ways and chuck it straight into the trash.

Hmm... Yeah, I'm gonna hit the Post Reply button, but I debated it for a moment. I don't want to lead others astray, into political discussions.

While hack can have multiple connotations, I chose to avoid it because it would most-likely lead to results about them getting hacked by criminals (which it has happened). I'll try modify instead.

Update: All I found was "How to Change Ring Door Bell Chime"

If it's wireless it's hack-able however the level of how easy it is to hack depends on how well you have your wireless security setup.

As I've mentioned to @Brickwizard I'm aware its hackable because I've read articles like the ones you've posted, but your reply doesn't answer my question about modifying the hardware

end-to-end encryption feature
I really don't want to take Ring's word for this. Now they can hand over footages to law enforcements without the permission of the owner. Ring, Whatsapp, Tiktok, google, they are all in the same basket.

As far as I know, jailbreaking a Ring camera might cause some issues when connecting it with their apps, but I have no idea about routing feeds through a pc server.

they seem to have it buttoned up quite well

Because Ring owns the software, and then most-likely sells whatever data they collect, they'll shut down any attempt at people stopping them from using it however they want

I'm sure that link will give this family comfort.

A lot of available legitimate hacking software free to download and use if you're willing to search for it.

Most users of these types of smart devices are dumb asses and are unwilling to learn and apply the necessary security to their networks.

I texted him earlier asking him if ever considered having his packages sent to the post office, UPS, or Fed Ex instead, and not only did he claim it would supposedly be a pain to do that, but also the camera would act as "extra level of security" because no one likes being videotaped (gee, that's because no one likes being treated like a potential criminal). I challenged him on the package issue by saying if he going to go out grocery shopping or whatever, he might as well kill two birds with one stone. Then I challenged him on the security issue by saying they've been known to be hacked because they're an IoT device, my parents have lived in the same house for the 34 years and no one in our part of town has ever gotten robbed, and even if the crime rates did start to noticeably increase, being armed, and having a sign on his front lawn that informs would-be burglars of that, would make him and his wife feel far more safe than putting blind trust in big tech. While I can't guarantee that text will make him get rid of it, I'm sure it will make him think about doing so. Just to be clear, I don't have a bad relationship with him at all (him and I have acknowledged we're more like friends than neighbors because we get along so well and we're both millennials), but because he's a normie, he sometimes makes dumb decisions which leads to discussions like this with him.

He recently went out of town for a wedding and, for whatever reason, forgot to ask his wife's brother to get their packages and mail for them, which led to me getting them instead. Because that reinforced my viewpoint, him and i got into a spat over it, which was something we were both trying to avoid. While I still stand behind my claims on the device being useless and intrusive, it was never my place to tell him that. This is a painful reminder of the saying "You can lead the horse to water, but you can't make it drink".

This is why I don't get involved with my neighbors or offer to help neighbors and especially meddle into neighbors business or affairs.

Neighbors want to have their deliveries dropped on their front porch that's their business I don't care.

If their packages get stolen from their front porch too bad that's their problem not my problem I don't care.

Wife and I live on a farm and have no neighbors close to our property.

Be a good neighbor and mind your own business and wave to your neighbors when you see them and leave it be.

Most neighbors are cool however some neighbors are a PITA.

My 2cents.

Cheers ;)

I'll second that, my neighbor has lots of cows...and they keep escaping and winding up in my lawn. There was a couple years where they would keep coming over to my house looking for them, and one time my dog went on to their property and was barking at them. My neighbor came over to my house, and told the person who was there that they were going to shoot my dog. I haven't seen him since i went and chewed him out about that fantasy! If your neighbor actually wants something from you, it wouldn't be a horrible idea to charge them for it. No way in hell am i going to bake my neighbors apple pies and shit!

I let my neighbor who has the farm next to my farm keep his cows in my pasture.

In return for doing so he gives me free milk and beef and keeps the fence mended and the pasture trimmed.

I don't have no big farm because I ain't no farmer but I do have some egg layers and that's kinda fun although sometimes a messy PITA.

My apologies @SpongebobFan1994 for being off topic.

Well i guess the question overall is security related, which i guess is neighbor related. That's awesome, i've never complained about their cows personally even though i get worried about them eating from my garden at times (...and they haven't because they have plenty of other vegetation to eat). I guess i could have leveraged the dog thing in return for something but i'm just glad he learned that he can't just say whatever the fuck they want about my dog.

I did apologize to him and we're on good terms again. Because he has small children, I gave him some Pedialyte coupons as a peace offering.
