First, the 'lol' part. I just thought it was funny that I saw a thread that said, "Can I really replace WINDOWS with Linux?" There are on average about two to twelve/fifteen replies to these threads. This one has over fifty :D

I'm really not new to Linux, but I'm new to actually getting my hands in there and doing stuff. My brother is a computer programmer @ Caterpillar, and built his computer, and os via Linux from scratch. I've always had a linux live cd/dvd (Dynobolic, Knoppix, Musix, etc), but I have never set up and run my own system. (My brother has always did whatever I needed, and I want to do this on my own as much as possible)

I recently obtained a desktop duel core amd athlon 64 box, and right off the bat installed a 32 bit Lubuntu os :D I was told it wold still work. I am a musician, and have been through the recording world since cassettes. I just got a LEXICON ALPHA, Desktop Dtudio (usb), and want to set up a system for audio. I was told over @ the Linux musician forum that Lubuntu was a good lightweight os for music production.

Here's where I am. First, I finally got easytether to install (doesn't work, but I installed it :D ) I have LMMS, Hydrogen, and Audasity on my Windows 7 laptop, and rosegarden, jack, ect on my live cd's. I can't seem to figure out the right hydrogen, and LMMS to download, because my brother said something about 'dependencies', knowing what they were, and downloading them.

Short story long, what do I have to do to get Hydrogen, Lmms, & Audasity up and running on this system? I always figured I could just download and install those, as they are after all Linux apps. Funny thing is, I actually can download the windows exe's and plug and play. New to this lingo, please help , and thankx in advance.

1) Find a Package Manager. This will automagically download and install packages with dependancies. Find "Software Center" or "Synaptic". If Synaptic isn't installed you can install it, either through Software Center, or by opening a Terminal and issuing the command: sudo apt-get install synaptic

Tip: You do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the web page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press your mouse wheel or mouse middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

2) You can simply install the packages with the Terminal as above. Just use the command: sudo apt-get install hydrogen lmms audacity

Thankx for the quick reply, but I can't get my easytether to work yet either, and was hoping my brother comes over tonight and gets it going. That's not a given, but I have absolutely no internet service here, period. A&T, even Hughsnet won't come here.

Tethering my android is the only option I now have. I'm using pdanet right now on a windows 7 laptop, but want to get away from windows all together.

Any Ideas about easytether? Google pops up, but just spins and says "connecting to google", but never does. My brother went into a terminal, and went to his email, so I know the connection works via terminal (Chinese to me :D ) , but doesn't connect via the gui. If I could get the tethering app to connect, I could try what you suggested.

Or you could just access the internet through the terminal. You could use
Code:
sudo apt-get install lynx
That is only one terminal internet browser(My favorite). Then just type "lynx [address]" and you could probably impress your brother at the same time.
Edit: By the way, if you have your phone set to tether then you should be able to connect to it like a wireless network.
