Suggestions on USB wireless network adapter

Has anyone had much success running a USB wireless network adapter?

I'm currently running a built in Broadcom chipset and I heard its having issues with upcoming Kernel 3.18 so I've been looking into the USB adapters as its my only hardware option for this laptop. I've seen many adapters with the Atheros and Realtek chipset that should run Linux. I really prefer a flush mount design adapter that won't get in the way and they're cheap. I read the adapters prefer line of site to the access point so I'm wondering how well they will work transmitting through a bedroom wall.

Try the Edimax EW-7811UN 150Mbps Wireless Nano USB Adapter or similar. It works fine on the Raspberri Pi, through a wall...

Thank you for the quick reply I will take a look at that one.
Also, I should have defined wall better; wall{2 walls with a bathroom in between}.

Problems with Broadcom? I have bcm4312; I hope the Kernel won't give me trouble.

Yep! all broadcom I think. I have 4312, 4313, and the driver is supported up range to newer models so I think its all broadcom. Read the notes/coments on:

I didn't think you run Arch anymore is Slack up to/ close to kernel 3.18? The issue begins at Kernel 3.18. I have not read the change log from Kernel.org yet perhaps I should, but from Arch package developer, in test environment, its an issue. Check the comments in the link I provided above. Interesting...

Any input on a USB adapter? The info from Arochester panned out to be really good and the chipset was what I was looking at anyway. I hoped I received more opinions but I think I;m on the right track.

You didn't ask for workarounds but here you go:

Install LTS kernel for fallback, add it to the boot loader and start it when wifi doesn't work on the main one. Use it for a while and keep the system upgraded... Check wifi connection on new kernels whenever you get them. A younger kernel will solve the issue eventually.

Another free solution: upgrade the system, then compile an older wifi backport, so that only your wifi module will be outdated (but working).

Yet another: try compiling the latest backport for your device and see if it works. http://drvbp1.linux-foundation.org/~mcgrof/rel-html/backports/

Or you can save time and spend money as you'd like better, but it's not the Arch way hah :D

Atheros has become really stable on Linux and the kernel handles it on its own, no need for extra software.

Good luck!
