I just installed Arch Linux. I'm using sddm plasma. Can someone help with kde-applications. Because i only want the cool effects of Plasma so i dont really need those unecessary apps that's in the kde-applications. I dont know which is important and which is not since i am only following guides in youtube where they just chose default(all). Plus my internet is limited only so i would like to install those necessary for effects only. I tried to not to install kde-applications but i had no terminal. If someone here uses Plasma 5, can you tell which packages you installed? i know you know a lot about these things so i know you know what's important and what is not. Thank you guys, hoping for good answers. thanks

Hello @Novice, and welcome to linux.org forums!
I don't use arch and when I made use of plasma it was from preconfigured settings from the distro of choice, so didn't cherry-pick individual components.
Hope some other members chime in but in the meantime, if it's of any help, I might choose these from kde-applications: ark dolphin konsole okular, and maybe: gwenview kate spectacle ffmpegthumbs. They have nothing to do with effects.

If you have kwin as window manager, effects can be configured from System Settings (systemsettings).

Another source of information is https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE

Welcome aboard, mate! I'm using Slackware, and have never tried arch, but I'm thinking that the wizard might be able to help( that's right wiz, I'm pumping you up too:D:D. ) Now that I've mentioned him, he may appear in a puff of smoke soon. (you know these Hollywood types, grand entry and all. NYUK NYUK.):cool:

Yeah thanks, Paul … I know where you live :)

@Novice welcome to linux.org. :)

KDE-Plasma – I have maybe 8 to 10 of my 70 or so Linux Distros running with Plasma, but I have not yet had a reason to try to de-populate them with regard to making them “less frills”.

So I would defer to @nuna in that regard.

I have yet to use Arch itself, but maybe soon.

Rather, I use “Arch-based” Distros such as Manjaro, Manjaro Strit (because it comes with Timeshift installed), Bluestar Linux, and currently, Netrunner Arch-based (based on Manjaro).

The Netrunner distro looks promising (I have used a fork of theirs called Maui before) – they have a Debian-based and an Arch-based product on offer.

If you are interested, you could try it from here

Being Arch-based, it comes with Pacman, and access to yaourt for use with the AUR (Arch User Repository) so it may not be too much of an adjustment for you.

The icon related to Steam is simply a result of my searching under Steam, and the installer appears, looks user-friendly but I am not a Gamer so will not likely install.

Calling up “All Applications” on it reveals less than the usual KDE, but I do not know if it will satisfy you. You could try it Live?

Good luck, and enjoy your Linux, and if I can be of assistance, just cast a fifty dollar bill into a pond, click your heels 3 times, and say “Take me home, country road”.

But not before next Thursday if you want a quick response. (see my profile)
