i am trying to connect a canon Pixma printer via WIFI but am unable to find a compatible driver.
OS is Linux MInt 17

This is what I get: "There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."

When I attempt to add a printer it doesn't detect it.

Try with a cable instead of WiFi.... sometimes that is needed first. It might help if you offered a model number too.

For future reference (future purchases)... it's hard to beat HP printers for Linux compatibility. Or at the very least, check for Linux compatibility before buying a new printer.

Cheers

@ERMINIA when you get time, can you please give me:

  1. Output of the following command at Terminal
    Code:
    uname -r
    and
  2. The subversion of your Mint 17 eg 17.0, 17.1, 17.2 or 17.3 - if you are not sure, go to Menu and start to type Welcome, it will bring up the Welcome screen which has the info?
(Wizard appears in a puff of smoke, trips over a Canon Pixma, demolishing it, waves his hand and it reassembles with one vital piece missing)

Welcome to linux.org, Erminia :). The above information can help us if, as with some Drivers, they are linked to versions of the Linux Kernel.

I have found a page here

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/...et-printer/pixma-ts3120?tab=drivers_downloads ... which may have the drivers you need, both printing and scanning. When you click the entries, expanded information become visible as seen below, and I have expanded the two that match your circumstances.

SCREENSHOT 1 - PIXMA DRIVERS

However note the format of the download filenames.

The .deb means it is for Debian-based Distros such as Debian itself, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and the like. The .tar means it is a tarball, which is an historic way of presenting software over the different media, using a command "tar". The .gz means that it has been compressed or zipped into an archive for easier transmission over the internet using a command gzip to compress it.

Have you had any experience with installing from a tar? If not, we may have to guide you.

I should say that if anyone finds a plain .deb from a reputable source, let us know, and even a .rpm (for Fedora, CentOS and others in that family) can be converted to a .deb by employing a small file utility called Alien - that is how I installed my first Canon under Linux.

I think that is the same link that @arochester gave above... and it does look like it should work for Mint.

Cheers

AAhhh, that would be my bad, sorry Arochester, and all.

I'm using Mint 17 xfce. This like to drove me crazy. Walked away and came back hours later. Did it!
The debian package installer does not respond. Extract the compressed file. Go to the "packages" folder and run the correct file (32 or 64 bit). Package should install.
Turn printer on with USB cable plugged to computer.
Start Menu > Preferences > System Settings > Printer. Add printer. Select the USB connection and follow prompts. Once completed, print test page.

That sounds like a "feel good" story, @Badger Dogs and welcome to linux.org :). That is, if I read it correctly.

Enjoy your Linux and your printing and (Friday here in Oz)

Due to the fact that a prior printer (Epson) does not offer support for Linux computers and the fact that the Epson printer started to fail (it quit printing when jobs were sent to the printer), I researched available printers that do use and support Linux. This research included both web site searches and phone calls to a company's Tech Support line asking about Linux support. One printer I found that does support Linux is Canon. Last week I ordered one and it was delivered over this past weekend. The unboxing and setting up of the new printer went without major problem, everything that should be included with a new printer was included. The problem is that the installed drivers on the new printer are for a Windows computer. Canon does have Linux drivers on their web site. I downloaded cnijfilter2-5.70-1-rpm.tar.gz, which was listed for the model printer I purchased. Canon Tech Support was no help in installing that driver. I now need to know the commands that would be needed to use the terminal window and install that driver. Any help would be welcomed.

@Jim43
1) Please don't add your problem to the end of somebody else's thread. Start your own thread instead.
2) What is the model of Canon printer?
3) What distro are you using?
4) Quite often when somebody says they do no support Linux, it does not necessarily mean their product does not work with Linux, it means they do not provide advice about using their product with Linux.

1) Sorry, but I did not see any tab or button to enter a new question.
2) The printer is a Canon PIXMA TS9520
3) The distro in use is Pop_Os! from System76. And yes, the same request has been submitted to them.
4) The last time I talked to a 'Tech Support' agent at Epson, that agent told me in no uncertain terms that Epson did not, and would not, support Linux. Shortly after that phone call, the printer started refusing to do some specific print jobs like printing from a web site (as to print an order confirmation or a receipt), then it would also not print a file from the local computer. All the time, all drivers on the computer have been kept up-to-date regularly.
I am simply trying to find the commands needed to install a *.tar.gz file that is the driver file for the new Canon printer.

as pop is loosely based on Ubuntu, you could try the link below, I cannot guarantee it will work as Pop is a hacked about version of Ubuntu

The make and model of the printer I am trying to install is: Canon PIXMA TS9520
The make and model of the computer, and the OS in use, is: System76 System76 Thelio, Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS (from personal trial, this OS is very similar to Ubuntu), 64-bit.

As I said it is based on a cut down version of Ubuntu, but with added Pop coding, consequently not all the commands we use for Ubuntu will work
the link I gave is for Ubuntu, I would expect it to work but cannot make any guarantees.

Generally you extract the contents of the file cnijfilter2-5.70-1-deb.tar.gz and you will get a folder called cnijfilter2-5.70-1-deb now open that folder and you should see an install.sh file to run that right click and open a terminal inside that folder and run
Code:
sudo bash ./install.sh
that will install the printer driver. Do the same thing for the scangearmp2-3 file for the scanner
