Hello,

i have taken over the system of my predecessor a few weeks ago and now i have several problems i can't solve alone:
I am running a: Slackware 14.2 (the command cat/etc/slackware-version gave me that information)
And on this system i have installed Xenserver (Linux 4.4.88-xen)
My problem is that most of the commands i use are not existing..
For example: i use this guide and tried to install xen tools with "apt-get install xen-tools" but i got:
-bash: apt-get: command not found
So did anyone nows a guide "how i can install xen-tools on slackware"? or anything else?

Additionally i am looking for a mentor that I can ask you a few questions from time to time.

hopefully somebody will find :)
Thanks and kind regards dfresh

G'day @dfresh and welcome to linux.org :)

I am moving your Thread to our Slackware section where it will attract the attention of @VP9KS who runs a Thread there.

Typically, we do not have the resources here to run a Mentoring program insofar as the number of Helpers here (all volunteers) is limited, and so questions and teaching are provided for the benefit of all Members and Viewers.

That being said, we are not tyrannical dictators :p, and the choices are those of whoever is able to help you.

Good luck, and take it away, Paul ;)

Apt-get is a Debian (based) package manager. It is a part of debian and ubuntu derived distros. Slackware is a more Unix type of distribution (and the oldest distro still being developed), and has its own package manager, slackpkg.
In a terminal, do a 'man slackpkg' for setup, syntax, etc.

FWIW, I have been using Slackware since 1992, right after I got disgusted with SLS (Software Landing Systems) with all its bugs. Yes, that is how far back this distro goes. So, if you post your problems here, someone will be able to answer your questions.

Hello,
thank you ok now i can install things :)
And so I have another question:
i created the xen-config-file(attached) manually and created a new guest domain; i use vncviewer to display the graphical interface of ubuntu and tried to install it the normal way;
problem is i got stucked right after the point where i must erase my disk etc.. erorr message also attached
i created a new partition with the command: sudo lvcreate -L 40G -n ubuntu-database /dev/vg0
but i dont now how i join them with my config file :(

I now this is no slackwarequestion anymore... more a slack-ubuntu-xen-construct; should we move the thread again? :)

thanks for help dfresh

Did you create /dev/vg0, first? I mean is vg0 exist in the /dev/ directory?
At this point, I am unfamiliar with the logical volume creation and with the xen tools. Perhaps you could ask the same question in a more specific thread under one of the subjects that are a better fit than Slackware general.

G'day folks :)

Our search facility gets indigestion with searching for 3-letter words (even when hyphenated) as too short/too common :(. So searching for

xen

or

xen-tools

reveals nothing.

I would throw this up to our Admin @Rob and ask, Rob, is there an appropriate spot for the OP to ask about xen?

Cheers

Sorry, but I guess that I arrived a day late, and a dollar short.o_O Thanks to HuMJohn for his wisdom.

dfresh: I missed some steps in the thread I guess.
Do you know if:
1. The system turned over to you is a full Slackware distro install?
2. What the kernel version is? ( uname -rsvip)
3. Is the xen version 4.4.88 a custom build or installed from a Slackware mirror? (i.e. what does ls -l /var/log/packages/xen* return? FYI slackbuilds.org is at 4.11.1, https://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.2/system/xen/)
4. Have you used sbopkg before?

Apologies for the questions if they are trite.
The reason for the questions is to determine where your predecessor was in the installation, it sounds like the kernel was configured as a xen hypervisor, but it is not clear to me from the discussion.

Thanks for that. I did not know that Slacbuilds.org had it on their listing. dfresh, if you have not used sbopkg before, I did a short posting about it in the Slackware forums section. Check it out. Hopefully it will help.

Happy Trails,
Paul
