thank you. so last night i downloaded gparted live and started to see play with it, but discovered from it that it wanted me to do a full format on my main partition, so by dealing with my kids and fixing my pc i got frustrated and started to think just to start over. So, i transferred all data into my external HDD and tonight i will just reinstall my Linux and properly do my partitions. My question is which partitions should i put on? I know i need /, boot, nd home. please let me know exactly where to place them so that my Linux could work divine please and thank you.

No worries, we have a glib saying here "When in doubt, reinstall!" :)

If you have a lot of personal data to protect, you could transfer it to that external HDD first.

Then boot from your Linux Mint Live medium and launch the Ubiquity Installer.

This time

- choose to erase disk and install LInux (if you are sure) and

- do NOT choose LVM nor Encrypt Home.

Let the Installer do the rest for you and then reboot into your new OS.

BTW using this method will incorporate all of your formerly separate partitions, including

/boot/, /home/ , /var, /tmp &c

... all into the one Root partition, described as /

... likely /dev/sda1

Let us know how you go, and then you can tell us a little more about that external HDD, it could be useful.

Cheers

Most modern distros offer the option to do this "automagically" for you, when installing and presented with the options choose as @wizardfromoz told you to

in the pop up window click continue

now just follow the rest of the instructions which are straight forward.

Hope this helps! :)

NOTE: Those screenshots are from a LM 18 VM, I hope the installer hasn't changed that much in LM 19 which I haven't tried yet.

G'morning Wiz,
I've been away for a bit long due to school, family, and work, but I am back for now. So, I deleted my old Linux mint and re-installed it with the assistance of this video:

now this is how it looks, after the new installation:

From here now, is where I would like to properly use your guidance and properly partition my drive please and thank you. I did this to all my laptops in the house so now i am a Linux follower 100% I no longer use OS Windows any longer in my home. Windows is useless but it will keep me with work for those people out there that uses it in a daily basis.

May you please assist me in partitioning my pc please and thank you.

hendricks54, What are you wanting for partitions? What requirements or needs do you have for partitions? The only thing I use partitions for is to set data size limits on programs or process that can create large volumes of data when something goes wrong. I create the partition as a space that can be filled to 100% without affecting other programs or services. Personally I wouldn't create any other partitions unless I was looking to set a maximum storage size that something or someone is aloud to use.

hello Drizzi89, well i have two laptops and my main pc. all three have Linux. so i want to manage both laptops with my pc. Network them. then i want to do multiple VM from my pc. Basically my pc will be the server. That is what I am looking for. May you assist me please and thank you.

I can help with that but it doesn't really fit this thread any more. From my understanding of your last post, you want to make your desktop a virtual host for Virtual Machines to use and manage your 2 laptops. First question is: What are you going to use for a hypervisor, ESXI/XenServer (type 1) or VMware Workstation/Virutalbox (type 2). Second question: What are you wanting to manage on the 2 laptops, security, authentication, monitoring? I would spend some time on the questions, do some research and decide what is the best solution for what you want to do.

G'day Hendricks, Ditto on what @Drizzit89 says.

Take a look at our Forums tab, and you will find

Server Linux, and some categories below it. I would guess General Server would be a starting point, to start a new Thread, mention you have LM 19.2 in the title and what you wish to do, so people can zero in.

Your setup currently is perfect for general use, KISS Keep It Simple Stupid applies :)

Tell us over at Server what amount of RAM you have, too. You likely do not need to set up a separate Swap, as you have already got it inbuilt - type and enter in Terminal

Code:
dmesg | grep -i swap*

and see - likely Zswap and a swapfile.

But our server people will advise.

Drizzit may like to recreate his Post above at the new Thread, or I can copy it there.

Friday in Oz so

Enjoy your Linux and

Thank you Wizard greatly appreciated. Have a fantastic day. I will go to the server string and start there. You have been such a fantastic help with this transition from Windows to Linux. See you soon. Greatly appreciated.

Always welcome, Hendricks - we'll look forward to sharing your continued adventures in the Wonderful World Of Linux :)
