I am a newbie in sorting out these problems and am terrified of the TERMINAL as that is what my age is close to, ya' see I am 81. I have been using linux for about 15 years, but definitely not to its extent.
My problem (I talk too much) and I have had installed 18.04 Ubuntu Bionic Beaver which will not support my HP2620 Office jet scanner. I can print but not scan.
During my search in trying to find a solution on the NET I have noticed many adds that indicate they can sort it out but are only directed to social media.

Hello Peter, and welcome! You aren't the oldest user here, so there is nothing to fear! Since you want to fix your scanner, we can assume that you are planning to stick around awhile longer! :D

You've got the printer working already, so that is half the battle. If you are trying to scan wireless, it is sometimes better to make it work with a cable connected first (often true with printers too). If you haven't already, you probably want/need to download hplip and simple-scan. These should be available in your Software Manager or with Synaptic Package Manager. With simple-scan, you open the Document menu, click Preferences, and see if your scanner appears in the dropdown menu box. With luck, hplip will give you the needed drivers.

If you aren't so lucky... you may get to learn some command line magic after all. :eek:o_O:D

HP is one of the best for Linux support, so I have little doubt that your scanner will work.

Cheers

Greetings Peter,
And welcome from a fellow 80 year old {actually I turned 85 last month}.
I can vouch for the fact that you have come to the right place for help.
The people here are more than willing to be of service to any who ask.
I am using Linux Mint 19.2 and an HP Office Jet 3830. I just tested the scanner and it worked just fine. Here's the result using 'Simple Scan' that Atanere mentioned.
4785

I usually use my Canon Lide 220 scanner which works very well.
As Atanere mentioned, you might want to connect the printer to your computer with a cable, instead of wireless. I find that both of my scanners work better with cable attached.
Once again, Welcome!

Peter, Peter, you old dog, it's been ages. :)

Peter has actually been around for closer to 2 years than not, but been quiet for much of that time - 18 months or more, I figure.

You're getting good help from above, so I won't intrude unless all efforts fail, but I will watch for a satisfactory outcome.

Cheers all

Here I am again. I can scan simple scan and that is about all I need for the moment. what I did was I removed Google Chrome. I have one of those small chip holders for the chip from my dashcam and going through the various posts I might have one that is damaged now. I will try it again. In my old computer, I could just put the chip in the device and plug it into a USB port and Off it would go, As a matter of fact, a bloke that did a U-turn in front of me told me he was going to contest the accident with his insurance company. I sent the video to his insurance company and my money was in the bank the next afternoon.

PS Horses certainly do yawn, Fish don't or they would drown.

Now THAT'S a feel good story, love it.

If I see anything that might help get the full functionality out of the OfficeJet, I'll swing through with links.

Is "simple-scan" and SANE the same thing? Just wondering. I did some research into scanners and Linux years ago but haven't looked into it recently. I wonder if someone may want both if using a stand-alone dedicated scan-bed scanner? Not an AIO printer scanner but an actual stand-alone scanner.
It 'USED' to be a problem but I don't know if it still is. One reason I try to stick with HP printers - with hplip everything just works :)

Greetins @Vrai
My Cano Scan 220 is a stand-alone scanner and it works great with Simple-Scan.
Plug in the scanner {USB} and Simple-Scan recognizes it immediately.
I'm using Linux Mint 19.2 Tina on this machine.

SANE stands for

Scanner Access Now Easy

Windows users may have come across TWAIN which stands for

Technology With An Interesting Name

... also for scanners.

SANE is old, but constantly developed and maintained. It covers Windows, Unix, Linux and OS/2 (OS what?) :), and as well as being cross-platform, is FOSS - Free and Open Source Software, licensed under GNU.

SANE, as with TWAIN, is often used to describe the requisite Drivers needed.

I like Stan's link above :D

Yeah ! sane won't work with the printer I have HP Officejet 2620 and I couldn't find it on the list of supported printers for Linux. 18.04. I wonder if it will work with the upgrade (19. summit????)

But simple scan works, although there is two simple scans on the Add ons.
