Greetings to all,
Need help with choosing a 'lightweight' distro for my hardware (specs below)

Hp Presario CQ 71 Celeron Dual-Core? CPU T3000 @ 1.8GHz 3Gb RAM 64 Bit (OS Widows 7)

HP Pavilion 590-p0xxx CPU Intel 6 core? i5-8400 @ 280 GHz 8Gb RAM
Came with Widows 10 installed ( No Windows 10 disc - factory refurbished 2nd hand buy from eBay )

After some unsuccessful distro installs on the HP Desktop 'puter mint, then I no longer have any OS on said desktop Oooooops! Wiping installed Windows 10 OS 'trying to install various linux distros
I'm using the Presario Windows 7 laptop for the internet ( VodafoneMobileWiFi... w.w.w. Linux info & HELP ) I have not attempted any distro installs on the Compaq

Currently have mx linux 19 patito feo running (almost... sigh!)
It seems a bit complicated for my skill level which I must state is extremely low re. linux I have nil experience
re leightweight distro
I'm looking for 'anoutofthebox' to connect Vodafone WiFi (youtube, email, some word processing, and watching down'd flicks/tv and listening to music. I'm not interested in tinkering under the hood ...If it works leave it alone
So, have at it... feel free to make other suggestions if you feel I'm missing an 'excellent distro'
A 'very Merry... to all, TTFN jo
PS I was also curious about antix but was a little put off by the 'windows manager' operation Yup, I also saw the rants about 'communism' LOL no problem

I personally wouldn't consider either of those all that "lightweight". Just about any modern
Linux will run of those comfortably. If you wants lots of GUI apps, I would go with Mint,
Ubuntu or Fedora. They are all pretty easy to install, compatible with virtually all hardware,
and have literally thousands of applications.

6 cores and 8GB is pretty good. Lightweight to me means a i3 or CoreDuo with 1 or 2GB.
If you wants a lot of apps, antiX probably wouldn't be my first choice. But it is lightweight.

thx for the info dos2unix I intend installing on the Pavilon to begin & then the 2006 Compaq (re the Compaq I simply assumed that the Celeron chip was 'weak') Lots of GUI apps not really a musthave on the Compaq I,ve only added Brave Browser, Apache OpenOffice Belenaetcher & VLC player Off to scope fedora thx again

Linux Lite is an excellent 1st Linux Distro, easy to navagate and learn Linux while using Linux. :)

Finally got the mx linux 19 up & running on the Pavilion... problem was (secure boot)
So, i'm gonna persevere with it for a while. However, I'm still thinking too complex & I'll need something 'lighter' for the Compaq
In January ( ...another 30Gbs from Vodafone 'woopwoop' ) I'll be giving Linux Lite, a 'test drive'
THX to all who responded to my initial post. We wish you a VeryMerry... &, a great Hogmany

Zorin 15.1 is very easy to use and it uses 2 GB most of the time. I have some old AMD A10 APU
(4 CPU cores) I bought in 2013 and a 2 GB graphics card.

Even when the fan on the graphics card broke and I had too stop using it until I found some replacement fan, Zorin kept on working smoothly from the APU unit only.

Zorin 15.1 was also recently released and it's even lighter.

Zorin is a no nonsense distro, Solus needs some tinkering.

Update! Solus 4.1 is a great improvement on previous versions. Quick fix updates are also timeous when a issue arise after weekly update.

Have a look at Peppermint 10 it's light on resources and easy to install / update and use OOTB.

Finally got mxlinux installed on the 'new' desktop &, getting more comfortable with it Now considering installing it on the 'Compaq' which is still running 'windoze se7en' However wifi connection is still proving 'elusive' on the desktop Will need to go to vodafone support to get help methinks
Will however bare Zorin in mind for the future Thanks for your input

I am trying Lubuntu 18.04 LTS now, because Firefox used to launch a bit slow in Zorin 15. It's no faster and things are more difficult and takes more time to find than in Zorin.

The good interface makes Zorin very easy and fast to use.

I also tried Ubuntu, last weekend and while it was updating after install, I looked around the options and programs/ The interface froze completely and I had to pull the plug in the desktop PC.

I don't know what the Zorin brothers did but their Ubuntu based Zorin 15.1 is more reliable than even Ubuntu itself.

Zorin 15.1 Lite was also launched lately but I haven't tried that version myself.

I use Zorin because the other Arch and Debian based distros are too much trouble and Windows is too expensive and uses too much data with the updates and I can't fix it when the update messes up something.(Like Arch Linux does sometimes.)
