Hi all,

ive got an old white MacBook running OS X and I’d like to install Linux cinnamon on it. Ive got 2 discs, 1 from the latest Linux magazine (UK) and another from a friend. I’m looking for advice on how to install the Linux package and run, I’ve gone down the route of disc in, turn off, turn on and boot from disc, it just seems to be taking forever to install ‍♂️

hopefully someone can guide me?

Hi and Welcome to Linux.org:)

Do you want to keep your OSX operating system or do you want to let Linux take over the pc?

To install Linux on your Mac you will first have to go into the BIOS and set the pc to boot to the CDROM drive. In other words, make the CDROM drive the first choice in the boot menu in the BIOS. Than save the changes and reboot.

Upon rebooting the Linux CD should boot up and from there you can install Linux.

You said Linux Cinnamon. Do you mean Ubuntu with the Cinnamon desktop?

Morning,
yes I’d like to let Linux take over and say goodbye to OS X yeah it’s ubunto with cinnamon, I’ve also got mint,

cheers

The above installation guide is what i used a couple of months ago for my 2009 white macbook

is yours a 2009 white macbook refurbished?
4 gig ram
2.4ghz processor

by any chance? I bought one of these 2 months ago from amazon for only £210 ( british pounds) which i think is around 274 dollars,

im currently dual booting i kept sierra on there and have installed linux mint cinamon onto it.

Dual booting has come in handy and saved my ass a fee times when things have gone wrong. I always know i have that macosx sierra there that will work if i screw up linux with all my constant tinkering and experimenting!

Morning,
I’ve had a chance to look at the Mac, it’s processor is 2.1ghz intel core duo and memory is 1gb 667mhz ddr2 sdram, looking at most of the install info it’s saying I need 25gb ram, I take it I’m needing a ram upgrade?

the 25g wont be ram it will most likely be hard drive space- so 25gigabytes of free space for the whole install.
To find out if you 64bit or 32 bit and all other system info. click the apple logo in your top left hand coner (or whereever it is on the bar of the desktop) then select "about this mac" then it will give you all the details of your system - ram, free gigs of space, whether its 64bit or 32 bit.

follow this to get mac system info guide to make sure of your system specs:

So,
hdd is 119.69gb with 73.69gb free, I’m deleting some junk to free up a bit more space. It’s still saying memory 1gb ddr2 sdram on the about this Mac window. Thanks for all the help so far!

Its looking like your pretty good to go! Are you on 64 bit ???? (im pretty sure it will be 64bit, but double check to make sure it isnt 32bit architecture)

Herees the linux cinnimon mint specs:

System requirements:

  • 1GB RAM (2GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
  • 15GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
  • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).
It will probably say on your discs if they are 32bit or 64bit.

Keep me posted and let me know how you get on if u get stuck i will try my best to help you out

well in that case installing a 64 bit OS version will give you a performance boost. Thus my laptop is 64 bit so using 64 bit slackware
