I like Manjaro but I deeply wish they had chosen a different default file manager. Dolphin is a buggy headache on so many levels and its made worse by the lack of an obvious "delete" function. Instead you have "move to trash" which does not work on large files. I actually had to do a search to find out that you have to enter "shift delete" manually to get rid of large files. Utterly impractical in my opinion and a real trap for newcomers.

Worse still installing other FM's like PacMan does not help because whilst it lets you access and manipulate files it wont move file to trash and delete them.

Anyway posting this because this really annoys me and I need to vent also to help anyone new to this distro like me who has this problem.

So do you want a Trash can, or do you want to send deletions to the bit bucket? Either way, you're gonna have that "aw cr**" moment.

Really, every piece of software has it's own unique ways of doing things. Get used to it, unless you are the code writer. I love Dolphin.

One could always delete from the Terminal.
$ man rm
rm - remove files or directories

One could always delete from the Terminal.

sorry, vrai ABSOLUTELY NOT

i take it sean is using Manjaro KDE, which has Dolphin as default FM

deleting it will break your desktop

back on my tomorrow with more

Hey Wiz, I believe Vrai was referring to deleting the desired files using Terminal instead of Dolphin. I've been an avid KDE user for 13 years. I really loved the file manager in KDE 3.x, Konqueror and I too didn't like Dolphin when 4.x came out. But I've grown to like it. It would be nice if it had a nice delete option instead of trash but like Vrai said, for big files or directories I just go into Terminal and delete it there. For everything else, Trash is good enough. I think though that you can change the size of the trash can to hold larger files. Just right click and pick trash settings.

Right-click on some file in Dolphin. There are two options listed: one is Move to Trash (Del), the other is Delete (Shift+Del), each even list their respective keystrokes. Best of both worlds ...

And, yes, you can use the command line. The command line is very powerful, and whatever you enter gets done - without question. To your joy, or your "aw cr**".

oops MY bad, 1,000 pardons vrai ... aspergers syndrome, misinterpreted the meaning

thanks for setting me straight @jglen490 :)

just an fyi - dolphin, as with other FMs can vary a little from distro to distro.

in sean's manjaro kde, if he is current, dolphin is v19.12.3 and it only includes the Trash option

I really don't get some of the usability decisions made around Linux and yes I know Windows 8 is the obvious comparison on the MS side. Especially as some of these releases are going semi commercial.

My chief gripe was more the bugs I encountered. If it works for you that's great I can but comment on my own experience.

Perhaps I should have been more clear. My bad. :(

Trying to anyway :)
Thanks your help is always appreciated. I am familiar with deleting from terminal its more a general comment about usability and bugs. I would like to see more people take up Linux but the point I was trying to make (probably badly) is it needs to adapt to mainstream needs not expect generalist as opposed to expert tech users adapt to it.

Hey Wiz,

I did anticipate removing it would damage the desktop so I installed PacMan alongside. It works better for me for almost everything but it doesn't seem to be able to delete files. So I'm compelled to either use terminal as Vrai helpfully pointed out or use Dolphin with its eccentricities.

I do know this but delete is not listed as an option, only move to trash. I had to do a quick search to find out you can click on the file and press del + shift to delete.

Thanks all for the helpful comments and advice. I know Linux like any OS is not perfect I'm just hoping that by offering hopefully constructive criticism as well as praise from time to time, Linux can be made more user friendly for people who are little more than enthusiastic tinkerers like myself and those who simply want to use it as an alternative to commercial software.

but delete is not listed as an option, only move to trash.

sean if you have your dolphin menu bar visible, go to

Settings - configure dolphin - Services

there will be a scrollable list. scroll down past all the root stuff and check the delete box, it wiil appear in your context menu

there is also delete under root actions.

sean just a heads up - i am moving this thread to Desktop/X - it is better suited there, as Dolphin being KDE is not to do with other distributions.

be assured all viewers and contributors will be auto-notified :)

wiz, off to look at your swiss army knife :)

You can but why then have a file manager. Chicken and egg?
Nope. Choice. So you can (and actually do) have it both ways :D
