Can the XP-445 and SX-435W scanners (as part of two different All-In-One printer/scanner/copier machines) be run in MX Linux 19.1, even if not all aspects of the scanners can work?

On the XP-445 in conjunction with my Desktop, the scanner wasn't recognized despite the all-in-one being switched on, although at least elements of the Printer section work (but not the option to be notified when the paper needs to be turned over for the other side, eg page 2 after page 1. so I have to print each page individually and totally manually in order to print pages back to back instead of on single sheets).

The following web site link states that these two models are supported by unmaintained:

I had to go to Indonesia to find the working drivers for an Epson , one time, using Debian. Suggest you search furhter.

I'd need to know where to start searching further, as the UK site lists there are no drivers and I have nothing to go on.

Since the above, but I'd need confirmation as to whether these sites are safe to download from (as I don't know if they're official Epson links), I've found a couple of sites that cover the Printer and Scanner sections of the Epson XP-445, hoping the Copier section is also covered:

At least the EBZ site is official as it redirects from the official Epson UK site.

http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php

This is unofficial, but if any, or all of these sites are safe to download from, I'll choose one. This has an array of options. Unsure which to choose:

This site stems from https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-ins...445-printer-scanner-driver-for-Ubuntu?share=1

There are also these links, one of which covers Debian based distros like MX Linux, but there are numerous options to choose from, and its' not clear if All-In-Ones are included:

https://tutorialforlinux.com/2018/04/29/how-to-install-epson-inkjet-printer-driver-on-mx-gnulinux-easy-guide/

This one is exclusively for MX Linux, but is unofficial. If it's deemed safe to use, this might be the quickest way of installing the necessary components to a fully featured or close as possible to fully featured set of Printing, Scanning and Copying options in Epson XP-445.

I agree.

At present, I can only use the Printer section in basic mode (having to do single sheets manually per page, instead of doing a set of pages and letting me turn the pages around to do them back-to-back), as the other Printing functions and all Scanner and Copier functions aren't currently in operation, but I'm hopeful full functionality of all three types of usage can be achieved in Linux.

I take it that you have visited this site?
Yes. Thanks for the link.

The dilemma I have is, as highlighted above, there are several sites that have instructions on how to download and install Epson drivers, in this case inkjet which forms the printing section of my XP-445 all-in-one, including an option to display the Epson Ink Level Meter which I didn't think was possible in Linux, whether GUI or Command Line instructions depending on the download source, one of which Tutorial for Linux (where the Ink Level Meter reference in the download relates to) which also includes a link for MX Linux, but while probably safe to download from, it's unofficial.

I utilize MX's main repository (pre-installed plus selections from their Package Installer) as top choice for safety which saves downloading directly from official sites (which aren't all safe from personal experiences with M$ Windows), but drivers for printers and scanners etc aren't included in repositories as there are vast numbers of peripherals and models per peripheral.

However, the Epson ebz link you've given me is official, as it links from the official Epson site so it's probably safest to download from those.

This Epson scanner driver package should be compatible with your printer:
After I downloaded and installed epson's scanner driver I got the scanner part of my printer to work, see my thread at https://linux.org/threads/scanner-not-detected.27920/
Thanks for the links.

In your "Scanner Not Detected" topic, it looks like you have the predecessor version of the Epson all-in-one - the 340, as mine comes under the 440 series (in the UK, XP-445, but overseas model numbers vary, eg XP-425, XP-435 etc).

Unfortunately, the first Download link is in presumably Japanese so I can't read it, but the highlighted blue links don't work.

The second one displays instructions in English, but despite following the instructions, the Terminal isn't recognizing any of them, with no Read Me anywhere in sight in the second of the two installation options, so I can't proceed, irrespective of whether I jump steps, although as the steps are in order, the latter ones would presumably only work if the former ones work, which they don't.

I've also come across this download link:

I'll try Debian 9 - 64bit(amd64) (then Debian 10 instead once I can install MX Linux 19.1 over MX Linux 17).

The instructions online are very confusing or appear logical but then do nothing.

With multiple options, I'm struggling to get this working, but delving around my Downloads folder, with an array of choices thus making it difficult to know which one to choose, after trying some without success including getting a tar.gz file to activate, I came across this:

/home/david/Downloads/imagescan-bundle-debian-9-3.62.0.x64.deb/core/

I've successfully downloaded it (stemming from http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php).

That link must be official as it redirects to https://global.epson.com/driver/imaging/support/index.html which in turn lists Printer & Imaging Products Support per country, in this case Europe - United Kingdom which in turn links to this link: https://www.epson.co.uk/support which I have used before, so it should be safe to run Image Scan.

I have now run Image Scan but "No devices found". Likewise to Simple Scan (where the Scansource section is greyed out) and other scan readers.

I've since found "Read Me" in a Downloads Image Scan folder, and copied the installation details into the Terminal, but once again, nothing is happening so I am totally confused how to proceed.

I have also found this link: http://support.epson.net/linux/en/iscan_c.html, but "Click here for how to install the package." merely links back to the multiple methods of installing, none of which work.

I could try the "Tutorial for Linux" Download option which allows the Epson Ink Level Meter to be displayed in Linux, but it's from an unofficial source so I don't know how safe it is to download from.

I'll pass on "Tutorial for Linux", at least for now (although if it's safe to use this option, I'd have the addition of Epson's Ink Level Meters, and hopefully the option to do printouts back to back where I only have to turn all pages around after the last one is printed, instead of Page 1, turn around to page 2, then put a new piece of paper in place for Page 3 then turn that page around to page 4, etc), but I have had partial success in getting my Scanner detected!, although only with One program - Gscan2pdf recognizing I have a scanner and displaying the scanned image after I did a new search.

If only the official Epson links were more straightforward, as everything I tried didn't work, despite following the instructions exactly as listed.

In the above Google link I went to MX Linux's Terminal and typed separately the following. This is the only way I've got anywhere (but Image Scan and Simple Scan still don't recognize I have a scanner for some reason):

sudo apt-get install libsane-extras into the Terminal window then Enter to install the SANE drivers

gksudo gedit /etc/sane. d/dll. conf also into the Terminal. There was no "Run" option to be found, so I just clicked Enter.

Is the all-in-one working as desired? If not, Download and Install MX 19.1 (Debian Buster), as you have indicated you intend to do.

Perform an upgrade

Try their Printer utility or do the following:

If any drivers have been tried and do not function properly, UNINSTALL them! Disconnect printer.

Install dependencies:

Code:
sudo apt install libgraphicsmagick3 libjpeg8
Download the tarred deb file from site given --
imagescan-bundle-debian-10-3.62.0.x64.deb.tar.gz

Untar the deb file -- See https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-unix-bsd-extract-targz-file/

Code:
tar -zxvf imagescan-bundle-debian-10-3.62.0.x64.deb.tar.gz
You now have a deb file, imagescan-bundle-debian-10-3.62.0.x64.deb
No need to make it executable because it already is < ls -al >
Code:
dpkg -i imagescan-bundle-debian-10-3.62.0.x64.deb

------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR INSTALL of SOME PACKAGES, User NEED TO BECOME ROOT (and maybe use Console)
HowTo Become Root:
Code:
 sudo passwd root

type in User passwd, then
type in New Root passwd twice

Code:
 su -
type in New Root passwd to become root

I don't understand why you are seeing Japanese, I just tried the link in my post and it goes to Epson's download page in English not Japanese.

Here are Epson's instructions on how to install the driver:

Hi sp331yi

Thanks for your information and link.

Wizard from Oz has posted the first of two videos for using the DD function to install MX 19.1 onto my new USB stick which in turn will enable me to then install 19.1 onto my hard drive, and will give me more time to concentrate on learning about Linux instead of forever fixing/trying to fix faults, as "Error" appears in parts of the Start Up process including my VGA monitor which (due to hardware problems that can't be fixed until after the lockdown ends when all computer services will be reopened) intermittently flashes the screen off to a blank screen then back to whatever's on the screen, and Libre Office doesn't work at all in MX Linux 17, but did in the USB stick installation of MX 19.1, so it should work fine when I get MX 19.1 installed onto my hard drive.

Once I reach this stage, hopefully this week, as I've never used DD before, and need to study it carefully, I will be able to utilize your invaluable instructions to ensure my all-in-one is fully working in conjunction with MX 19.1. I'd implement them now, but I'd be better waiting until I have the most updated version of MX.

At present, in MX 17, usage of my Epson XP-445 is limited.

As far as I can see, the Scan section is fully functional (I've only ever used it for scanning and copying images).

In contrast, the Printing section is only partially functional. This is either a drawback of Epson not making drivers for Linux (but they link to Epson ebz sites, but with further drawbacks), although they have links to ebz sites and unofficial ones including a program that incorporates the Epson Ink Level Meter monitor status, or more GUI/source code is needed to make the XP 445 fully functional.

The Printer successfully prints documents, but I can't find a way to follow on from M$ Windows 7 whereby I can print say 10 pages double sided, but instead of the printer doing one set (pages 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9) then prompting me to turn the paper around to do the second and final set (pages 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 on the back of the odd number pages), I have to manually do every page singly.

For example, print Page 1, turn the paper around, print Page 2, turn the paper around, print Page 3, turn the paper around, print Page 4, etc instead of only one turn around for pages 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.

When I have MX 19.1 installed on my hard drive, hopefully later this week, I'll be able to initiate or increase functionality, depending on the programs in question for optimum possible range of options.

As MX 17 is a temporary measure pending MX 19.1 installing to my USB stick then hard drive, I'll wait until I can shortly have MX 19.1 up and running on my hard drive and implement the steps you've quoted, also as the Update process seems affected:

"E: There were unauthenticated packages and -y was used without --allow-unauthenticated

dist-upgrade complete (or was canceled)".

It's pure luck that I found an alternative means to get the Scan section working with my Epson XP-445 (but it only works in the Image Scan program, not Simple Scan for some reason, as Simple Scan still won't recognize my scanner).

Your information is more detailed than the Image Scan process I used to get the Scanner functional, which will be even more beneficial for when I do scanning in MX 19.1. :)

I don't understand why you are seeing Japanese, I just tried the link in my post and it goes to Epson's download page in English not Japanese.

Here are Epson's instructions on how to install the driver:

Hi Mechi

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, like before, nothing works when I follow the instructions, as the very first instruction isn't recognized, which prevents me from going beyond.

"imagescanv3_man_j.pdf 613.67 KB"

This is how the Download3.ebz link appears on my computer.

Upon close inspection, English is there after all, but heavily mixed in with Japanese. Even then, the instructions are cryptic or ambiguous, as when I follow them, obstacles prevent me from proceeding further due to code not being recognized. Epson could do with simplifying this process so that, when users type in what they read, the process works. That is sadly not my experience.

For instance, "dpkg --install imagescan_${ver}–${rel}epson4ubuntu_${arch}.deb" doesn't make clear what the "{ver}" information is that's need to complete the process as an alternative to "install.sh" which is also doesn't work. Such information is essential for beginners or fairly new users of Linux like me in order to complete a process:

That is very weird, where are you getting the PDF Japanese file from? It's certainly not the link I posted. Did you download the driver from this page - http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php Once you download the version for your Linux distro you can click on the downloaded file and install it:

From Epson page:
"You can install the package of this driver software by using package manager.
Note: The following description may be different on your environment.

  • Double-click the Image Scan! for Linux binary package icon to install it.
  • If you can find install option by right clicking on the package icon that you have downloaed(.dev / .rpm), you can specify it.
Please run the package installation in the following order.
  1. core package
  2. network plugin package"

I just noticed that in a post you said you got the scanner to work with Imagescan but not Simplescan, have you tried going to "preferences" in Simplescan and then changing the "Scan Source"? That's what I did to get Simplescan to work.

It was Post 9 - "Epson drivers & downloads" which takes me to this link:

From there, I clicked on "Accept", and it's the first of the two links below where the Japanese text "imagescanv3_man_j.pdf 613.67 KB" is displayed.

I've also seen this link before, but haven't yet downloaded from it. I had a myriad of links and wasn't sure which to choose:

http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php

I don't know (but will check later this afternoon, UK time to see) if the Debian (for MX Linux 17) Download installs fine on my computer (as some online instructions are incomplete or ambiguous, which leaves me totally confused, as they don't allow me to proceed further).

If it does, it might increase the range of Epson XP-445 functionality to the optimum, as Micro$oft Windows and Apple Mac have full functionality built in, whereas with Linux, users have to go through extra steps to achieve the same result.

I don't mind going through extra steps to achieve functions in Linux (where not out of the box), but just want them to work.

Although I'll be switching to MX 19.1 asap (after I hear back from Wizard from Oz), only stalled due to technical problems and my USB drive in the wrong format, which is now in the correct fat32, I'll try the "imagescanv3" link you've requoted and your instructions which follow to try to implement the Epson installation files temporarily into MX 17, pending doing the same implementation asap, but into MX 19.1 (as a GRUB bootloader fault during what seems to be a hardware error switching off my computer automatically and disrupting the process, which might explain why the GRUB fault occurred).

Once I have 19.1 up and running, I'll have the most-up-to-date version of the Linux distro (with Libre Office working, as it doesn't in MX 17) and can concentrate on installing the drivers needed for the XP-445 all-in-one and other elements of Linux, as by then my hard drive will have 19.1 on it, I'll have more time to also concentrate on learning the ins and outs of Linux which will become second nature in time and MX 19.1 will no doubt be more functional due to being better prepared, thanks to you and the other forum members in this topic and/or other topics. Between each of you, I have learnt a lot since I first posted the topics. :)
