Hello, it seems like my original thread doesn't get any more replies, so i'll post a follow up to make sure it's seen. I still want to get my system back without formatting the partition it's on.

i tried disabling plymouth and seeing the status of lightdm.service:

One question: were you able to log in when you booted into recovery like I discribed?
No, i wasnt able to do so.
I would first disable it via
systemctl disable plymouth
Then reboot and it should work fine.
