    I had noticed that it tool a very long time to authenticate even from the console. 'top' should the cpu to be idle. df -hP !!!

    Thanks guys. I could kick myself!! I had filled the / up with a backup from my workstation. There was no space left on the root volume! Now everything works just fine. Sorry to waste your time. :)
