Hello people

I am going to build up a desktop
computer, I bought for it the AMD Ryzen 3950 (CPU)
and am thinking about a corresponding hard drive SSD.

The SATA ssd's are slow if compared with Ryzen's
abilities, and I guess I would try one of NVME,
for example this one seems nice

Corsair Force MP510 V2 - 480 Go
SSD 480 Go, PCI-Express 3.0 4x, M.2, NVME, CSSD-F480GBMP510B

However I am not sure that it is possible to install
Ubuntu on such disk. I have a sad experience with my Dell inspiron
laptop where I could not install Linux by a very basic reason:
the Linux kernels do no see the NVME drive.

The Desktop case could be different. My question is the following:
does somebody has an experience of installing Ubuntu
(or another distro) on a Desktop with NVMe drive?
If yes, did it work? was it difficult? Would be quite interested in details.

Thanks!

Happy NY 2021

Stef

Without knowing what model your PC is, I'd advise to make sure that you have the RST driver disabled in your UEFI settings, or otherwise Linux won't see the drive. Other than that, there is no reason that the NMVe shouldn't work.

Note that the RST settings could be what is blocking on your Inspiron, although I can't be sure without seeing what model it is.

I have my current Desktop system installed on a nvme ssd and my homeserver system is also installed on a nvme ssd and they were just automatically detected during installation didn't have to do anything special for it. I wouldn't expect anything less for Ubuntu unless it's one that's not very well known or common.

Hi f33dm3bits,

Thanks for the reply and for the good news.
Could I ask for more details?
Have you built up your desktop yourself, or bought
one ready for use? In the last case, did you install Linux
yourself, or it was already there?
Which distro do you use?

Thanks

Stef

Hello LorenDB,

I am only going to built it up ) it does not exit yet.
Of course it is the RST ("raid") which blocks installatyion of Ubuntu on Dell Insp.
I spent a lot of time trying to disable it - all in vain

Thanks

When I built my desktop (AMD Ryzen 5 3600X) last year I installed an NVME (Samsug 970 Evo 250 GB's) and the Linux Mint installer saw the NVME w/o any issues.

Since than I have installed Debian and Manjaro on the NVME and it's considerably faster that my other 2 mechanical HDD's. The NVME with Manjaro installed on it boots in 3 seconds!

It was not hard to install those Linux distro's on the nvme at all. :)

With Linux you just have to make sure while using the partition manager during the installation that you have selected the correct drive. Generally, it's in the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner of gparted. Other basic partition manager's sometimes list the drives at the bottom of the window in the partition manager.

As you get closer to purchasing more hardware for your build you may want to list all of the spec's for those items so we can make a good recommendation's/suggestion's for you.

Good Luck with your build.

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,

Great thanks for the reply.

Just one question: when you were installing an NVME did you ale\ready have your Lin distro
on another drive?

Or NVME was the drive where you initially installed Lin?

Because I would like to have just one drive namely NVME one,
since it seems to me that if I have another drive, says SATA ssd and my root partition is
there, I can loose considerably in speed even when working with NMVE

Happy NY btw )

Stef

P.S. thanks for the link about RAID I will have a closer look at it,

No, when I installed the nvme I didn't have Linux installed on one of my other drives.

First after building my rig I booted it up, disabled the secure boot in the BIOS saved the changes and rebooted. Than installed Linux Mint to the nvme.

Hope the Raid links help and yeah, Happy New Year!

Like Alexzee, I replaced my laptop's Optane/NVME drive with a Samsung 970 500GB. Works fine with Kubuntu 20.10.

I did go into the UEFI/BIOS to ensure all the settings were right. Kubuntu 20.10 installed very nicely and works just fine. My laptop is a new HP x360 Envy. I am keeping the original Optane/NVME with Windows 10 on it, just for warranty purposes, and have it in the laptop's original box. The Samsung 970 cost a few dollars, but is well worth not having Windows 10 or going through the BS of dual-booting.

Oops, I should have seen that
Can you tell us what model the motherboard is?
Of course it is the RST ("raid") which blocks installatyion of Ubuntu on Dell Insp.
Just curious--what model is the Inspiron exactly? (I realize that getting the Inspiron working may warrant another thread, but I can't help myself...)

I ordered my desktop system on a computer webstore, I selected the hardware components myself and had the webstore put it together for me so I didn't have to do it myself. I selected the the hardware components based on what I wanted not because of Linux compatibility(I have never looked for hardware components with Linux compatibility when buying a new system) and I installed the system myself and I run Archlinux on it.

Inspiron 13 7000 2-en-1 (7391)

I made a thread about it already )))

After having noted that the time spent on my attempts
installing Linux on it would be sufficient to earn enough money
to buy just another one suitable for Linux I stopped it.

Otherwise it is a reasonable machine - but Windows
