Has anyone upgraded yet?

If you have Linux Mint 20.1 and it's working without any problems or issues no reason to change in my opinion.

Never understood why users always jump from version to version for no reason and can't be that much of a difference from version to version.

I could be wrong though as I don't use Linux Mint.

Stick with a sure thing.

If I were you I would just upgrade because it's just a minor release but don't forget to make backup. Eventually Linux Mint 20 will be end of life and in order to upgrade to 21 you will have to install all the updates in 20.2..3..etc before being able to upgrade to 21. If you don't the upgrade process will make you install the most recent updates of 20.x first which will include all those minor release versions.

I have not upgraded yet. I will probably not do so for at least a few weeks. It depends...

on what?, i hear you say....

the state of the nation, the price of fish.....

I actually rely on what I read.

The various Linux blogs are a treasure trove of info....some of it as boring as watching paint dry, but some of it is actually informative and 'on the money' ...Factual and concise.

So far what I have read is positive.

What I read in the next few weeks?....who knows?!

LM20.1 runs like an absolute dream. It is not going to 'break' tomorrow (God willing)

When you are on a good thing....stick to it ....or as @Nelson Muntz would say, Stick to a sure thing.

The time will come.

Just not now.

On one SSD I'm running Cinnamon 20.1 which is supported till 2025, so there's no hurry.

from the above Link... @MatsuShimizu ...apologies for pulling your link apart....I just did not want anyone to miss any of the points made inside it !!!

Kudos to the Linux Mint developers, what you've pulled off is nothing short of astounding.

But while I was using Mint 20.2, I noticed something special—the performance was good, like ridiculously so

then I started poking around the settings and found a new Memory limit feature (Figure A), that allowed you to enable Cinnamon to restart when it was using too much memory.
mint202.jpg

Once you enable the memory limit, you can define both the limit and the frequency check. With the work the developers have put into 20.2, Linux Mint might well be one of the best performing operating systems on the market.

ith Linux Mint 20.2, the update notification system will inform users how far behind they are with updates. That reminder will keep popping up until the user applies the updates.
"This new notification feature was designed to add comfort to the user experience, not remove any, so making sure it was a nice addition and not an annoying distraction was key. The way this is handled in other operating systems, such as Windows or Mac for instance, was an example Linux Mint did not want to follow."

Whats not to Like??....It is ticking the boxes I look for.

I am very tempted

I will sleep on it.

Last night i remembered the 1# rule for new Linux users "Linux is not windows!"
After all the years of ms having bugs after a new release its ingrained in my mind that any upgrade will be trouble. Doing 20.2 tonight...;)

Updated to 20.2 this afternoon.

Took a snapshot with Timeshift, First. (with a notation that this snapshot is prior to Upgrade to 20.2)

Started at 4.35 pm

Rebooted at 4.41pm

Updated and Ready for use at 4.42pm

therefore 8 minutes.

Then I ran:
Timeshift with notation that this snapshot is immediately after upgrade to 20.2

Then, in Terminal...(and yes I realize that some of these were totally unnecessary/double ups etc etc...)
I have never bothered to commit the differences to memory

sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt clean

sudo apt autoclean

and because I run an ssd

sudo fstrim -v /

I made a few adjustments in the Update Manager...updating flatpaks automatically...set my own numbers for notifications re updates .....

....and a few other bits and pieces.

I also set memory Limit in System Settings to a few random figures. I may adjust it later...maybe not

Overall i have a made a net gain of approx 4GB on the SSD, and the uptick in overall speed/responsiveness is very noticeable. This pc was already quick...it is now quicker.

I had given serious thought to a fresh install before I upgraded today

Now?...a fresh install is not going to achieve anything that I need.

I would not know that unless I did it...right?....yes, but when I think of the usual screwing around setting things up again....the brains instinct process says No. leave it alone.

I will also Upgrade my Wife's PC tomorrow. ....and that is something I do not do without plenty of thought beforehand.

As @Hillbilly H said above this post....."Linux is not windows!"....(and thank God for that !!!

As jack Wallen, Software Writer said "With the work the developers have put into 20.2, Linux Mint might well be one of the best performing operating systems on the market".....&
Kudos to the Linux Mint developers, what you've pulled off is nothing short of astounding.

I agree.
