Newbie at Linux Command Line

Hey guys so i've just begun my Journey with Linux and I've begun to learn the command line i'm still crawling and walking a little when it comes to the terminal. I've learned commands that are basic like whoami, pwd, cd, mkdir, rm, ls, apt-get install, touch, nano filename, top. htop, kill "processid"

So I am at a very beginner level at Linux and am beginning to explore the system by being able to move to different directories and list files and create basic files, to log in to root and take a little command. SO I am crawling and walking in my system. I was wondering what I could do at this point to move forward in my journey that is where to go from here!

Good for you learning the CLI. It will pay dividends as you get further into Linux. This page may be of help to you also.

I've used CMD in windwoes for a few things...so switching to the Linux Terminal isn't harder to learn.

I'm no expert and can't remember them all...so I keep a list of commands that are useful for installing software...checking my system etc...maybe we should have a list of safe useful commands on the Forum ?

I suppose it might be argued that we have some leads in articles such as this

... but perhaps that just shows the tip of the iceberg, and Rob has not yet come up with an index on the tutes.

I forgot to mention back in the dark days of windwoes if a process or software froze...you could install a program called rkill to stop and close it in CMD...I'm not talking about system freeze.

Not long ago I discovered if I open the Terminal in Linux Mint and type xkill and hit Enter...my mouse pointer turns in to an "X" and if I click anything I get the same result as rkill...of cause this doesn't happen in Linux Mint and on the very rare occasion I get a system freeze...I press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace which brings me back to the Login Screen.

I was think along the lines of...
Graphics card Information. inxi -SGxx
CPU Info lscpu
What OS are you using inxi -S
Mint desktop environment inxi -Szxx
Firewall Status sudo ufw status verbose
CPU Usage cpufreq-info
Show DNS Being Used… sudo nmcli dev show | grep DNS

i haven't found a better book on bash yet, that has a ton of information.

im beginning to learn the issue is that most of my internet activities don't require that I use a terminal. Like posting on forums, checking email, watching youtube etc im just bitching that I dont know what to do with linux. in fact I dont even know what to do with the internet anymore guess im gettin old.

Hmm... Here's a bunch of terminal-based stuff, some of which are useful activities...


Some of 'em are pure "let's learn this ..." kinda articles, without a whole lot of use outside a few situations/people. But, there's a bunch of 'em.

there are terminal browsers that probably aren't as good as firefox...if you have photographs or other kinds of files you prefer to backup, the terminal is very useful for that, even though you can just use GUI. Linux is better if you have fun with it, lots of things work on linux but of course lots of things don't.

I'm an average user...most of the time I use the GUI but there are times that the Terminal comes in very handy.

We all have to learn sometime and that's what this Forum is for...to help and being old has nothing to do with it. For me windwoes is too hard...I wouldn't know how to use windwoes spyware 10 or 11 as I stopped at windwoes 7 and so glad I did.

Choose a user friendly Distro like Linux Mint Cinnamon or Mate and give it a try...you've nothing to lose and once you start to get the hang of it...you'll see it's not that hard after all.
