Timeshift & Similar Solutions - Safeguard & Recover Your Linux

Excellent, Sue - as that is one screen which is mega-important :)

I'll explain a little now, and more soon.

As part of the process you'll follow, you will change the choice on that screen to check the two buttons on the right, where currently the two on the left are checked.

This will enable Timeshift to take a full snapshot of everything in your root / folder, where your Mint system is (/dev/sda1), as well as your Home folder (for those who have their Home as a separate partition, perhaps even on a different drive, that will be included as well).

Changing that setting will also ripple through to the Filters tab, changing the position of - (minus) Exclude to + (plus) Include.

I'm off to update myself on your Printer thread, and then I'll be back to start putting together a blow-by-blow for you.

Cheers

Party Pooper - I was saving that for Ron (lateR ON):)

You can.

Using either GUI point and click or Terminal. Say the file is named robsstuff.odt (Libre Office Writer doc), and we are on Fedora (for Debian-based, skip the "/run/")

1. From the Summary page in Timeshift that lists your screenshot, note the date and time of the relevant screenshot

2, Navigate to where the screenshot is saved - eg in my case it might be

cd /run/media/chris/Timeshift-SSD/timeshift/snapshots/2020-01-16_15-07-02/localhost/home/wizard/Documents/

and Enter. Find your Doc and cp it (copy, do not move or cut) to where you want.

Timeshift has no compression, it is 1:1, so the file is usable in our Distro. We copy it, because if we cut or moved it, it would interfer with Timeshift's log, and possibly compromise the integrity of the screenshot.

Is that what you were looking for?

Just a BTW Rob - Timeshift acts as Root in its operations so assigns root permissions to all files in screenshots, if copying back, just adjust for that. It reassigns permissions appropriate with a proper Restore.

Cheers.

Well, many days later I got the idea that you wanted me to go ahead and perform the above. I have done that. Now tell me, since this has gone on so long, do you need me to re-send all the screenshots?

Wiz, have I missed the next step somewhere? Or are just as busy as I suspect you? :)

Yep, back on deck in about 12 hours.

Nite.

BTW what happened with the printer (over there, not here)

Sue hi, regrets on the delays.

Can you launch Timeshift, and show me the screenshot of the snapshots stored?

It will look less populated than the below.

Just need to see what you have so far, if anything.

I'm working on it. I've tried to open 2x in the last 5 minutes and I keep getting the message below:

No hurry.

Re-visit the first of your two screenshots above where you have the Schedule shown. Note the bottom 3 lines or so.

Chances are you are trying to run a manual task (looking at Timeshift) at the same time as the hourly check is being run, or other automated task. Result is conflict/lockout.

Just try it again later.

Well, I was finally able to get my 2 cents in.

Several posts got so close to answering my question...

I have a snapshot of Rosa (actually, two) before I installed Tricia over it. The snapshot was saved on sda1 (if I have that designation right).

After Tricia got installed, I have Timeshift saving to sda2.

The question is: how can I get Timeshift to move all snapshots to sdb1?

Select the location of choice on your system.

(pic below is of a random system)

@Condobloke
Exactly right Brian!
Here's a screen shot of my Timeshift I just now took.

All available locations will show up in this window.
As you can see, my location for my snapshots is an external 3TB drive.

I love screenies!

You misunderstand...

The question is: how can I get Timeshift to move all existing snapshots from wherever they are now to a new location at sdb1?

Right click on the saved snapshot and select 'move to' or 'copy to'... .....name of new location ...?????

(I do not have a copy of Linux mint available at the moment, so this is from memory)

i suspected as much

welcome @bsmither i am wizard with a broken shoulder, hospital in 36 hours can't help much until fixed.

no such option, sorry brian

you MAY be able to use clonezilla to move the partition from point a to point b without interfering with integrity of log files - haven't tried it

if you bust the log file/s the snapshots will become bricks.

sounds like you had ts snapping to home on sda1 is that so?

for now i would continue with new location an see what we can work out when i am well.

screenshots of gparted and timeshift would help.

see my vid at

Wiz, I'm not seeing a blow-by-blow of how to restore with Timeshift. I'd still new to Linux, and got pretty lost when I started reading this thread from the beginning, so it could be I just missed it. At any rate, I'm still lost.

Also, I have another question - I recently started doing some blog writing on this computer and have all the originals (only 6 so far) stored on this computer. Do I need to back these up somewhere else? I don't want to lose them, of course.

:)nope - had to wait first for those answers you've given from the other two threads to see that a timeshift restore would not be contra-indicated. don't want you coming after me with an axe.

if you can get me a screenshot like #192 with all entries showing, that would be good.

x-rays tomorrow, teleconferencing day after.
