newest kid on the block

@hacodo75
I have an older version HP laptop and soon as you hit the power on button hit the esc-ape key and it brings up the option menu to select what you want to do.

Hi Guys, I have finally sorted the bios out. Apparently its different with manufactuirer /even models. This is latest HP instructions for Win 10 ==
Settings= Update/Security=Recovery=Advanced Startup=Restart Now=Use a Device=
USB Drive UEFI=={Press Enter}= Boot Manager=F10 Change BIOS Setup options.
It sounds longwinded and it is, but gets you there. I did try all the other suggestions but nothing had any effect. Thanks to all your help.
Now that I have the BIOS facility I'd like to get further. I've got UNetbootin on a flash drive.Is it now change Boot sequence and hey presto?? LThere is the little matter of EXT4? Please I just want to get going! hacodo75

Wizard was quite right to mention Ext4 but your no way near there, so for get that for the minute. The unetbootin file you have is for windows, drop and drag that .exe file onto your computer and install it . Either right click run as admin or 2 left clicks of mouse.

The unetbootin is a program to help you put what you need onto the stick. It should be as you bought it from the shops (fat32) and with nothing on it.

So the agenda is:

1) get unetbootin installed
2) make sure you have a usb stick say 4 gig thats virgin with nothing on it.

you can't move on until that has been completed. So as they used to say in mission impossible, "that is your mission should you wish to accept it"

Right captain-sensible = = My stick has been wobbling in the seat. That was all done since yesterday.

Something missing on my message: I got a new stick and formatted FAT32 and loaded it with
UNetbootin.exe. Then I found how to get on the BIOS and got all exited at 11.30 last night. Its already and waiting the command to jump. Where do I drop it in the Linux partition?

are you saying you can see on a small gui the same as my screen shots ?

Having checked through your screenshots from earlier, Yes I followed that along with the download. So that should be in order. Hopfully, says he.

then try drop down top right to select an os ; make sure the drive its downloads stuff to is your usb stick and not your pc

What you see in my screen shots
To be absolutely sure I have all of this done again and can confirm everything was excecuted and looked exactly like your screenshots. I have unetbootin on flash drive, not on pc. Do I need to go back to your first screen where they list the os's?

I;ve also been in BIOS and changed boot from stick. was that right??

Just chacked back to #44, that's exactly were I am all complete. Pheww !!!

I just about managed a screenshot of the stick file. but not sure how to get to the pc. Its probably useless.

ok that helps, so looking at usb E: it looks like your ready to boot

there is another usb attached which might confuse you. So take out usb D; power off your computer and leave usb E attached. Hit the power button and press esc button a couple of times almost immediately after you hit power button. That should give you boot options and key to get into bios. They are probably F9 and F8 or F10

Press boot option key , and it should give you two options ; it will say something like HD kingston (or other name of usb brand)and your main hard drive use up and down keys to highlight usb option and hit return button. be patient salix should boot up. Its the "live"version by the look of it, so you will be using it running from usb. Your going to use it to play with and get comfortable using linux. if there is any pass to log in try"one" . to pwoer down go to menu at botton left of salix and pwoer down like windows when your finished. let us know how you get on

What you see as usb D: is not s flash drive but my partition I set up in readiness. Its still unformatted.
I will now play with Linux, thanks.

nothing happens, I have been back to BIOS and I can't see that its changing the settings I go down to boot option and change to USB -CD/ ROM something. I F10 that, but when I start up pressing esc button makes no difference , as same startup windows appears as with WIN 10.
