Hello Linux.org,

I just installed LMDE 4 Debbie and it's another improvement over LMDE 3 Cindy which was A-OK.

From a DVD I let the LMDE installer do everything and once completed I updated my new install and installed a few bits of software all of which came from the LMDE / Debian repository.

I also applied a few minor tweaks which most if not all Linux distros require.

The install and updates and additional added software installed OOTB without any problems and appears to be working great.

LMDE 4 Debbie is worth a look at and a test drive imo.

I used Mint for a while on my playground laptop. I never got the point of having a Debian implementation of Mint, that is already downstream from Debian. But, if that's what they want ...

I never got the point of having a Debian implementation of Mint, that is already downstream from Debian.

The point plain and simple.

"LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for “Linux Mint Debian Edition”. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu.

LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead."

The above posted quoted from link.

I got it. In a paranoid view of the world, Ubuntu is the single point of failure; that risk is exceedingly low. The reality is that Ubuntu is not going anywhere, it is expanding into the commercial world, and has a SIGNIFICANT part of the private, personal installation base of Linux.

So instead of cloning Debian, with all its issues, why not make Mint do what Ubuntu does and that is make a Debian derivation, with the neat apt packaging and the nice neat .deb packages, that is nice and cuddly and friendly to the user - like Mint already is. Clem chose to be after Ubuntu in the stream that starts with Debian. LMDE is a distraction to what Mint is really good at.

I don't see Ubuntu leaving the scene either although Clem Lefèbvre perhaps feels it to be a possibility someday I guess, who knows.

Personally I'm not a Linux Mint fan however I do have and use Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon and LMDE 4 Debbie on desktops and have zero complaints.

I cut my teeth on Debian Wheezy and never had a problem with it and have never had any problems with any Linux distro that I've used which was Debian based.

I use many different Linux distros scattered across10 different desktops and for the most have zero complaints or problems.

I can't even draw a pistol, zero artistic talent - especially at 20 paces! Where do you find a pencil that long?

;)

Here's one for you! Apparently students must now be careful when drawing 'square root' symbols because it resembles a 'pistol' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
