Linux in 2025 could hit new heights and break through five percent in early spring

I'm inclined to agree. I don't care if Linux is popular. I use Linux because it's what I like. Besides, if it was really popular then can you imagine how much more support we'd have to do? The forum would be inundated with newbies, overwhelming those of us who support them. It'd be crazy!

Should I enable secure boot after installation of Linux

I use Secure Boot. It verifies that I'm booting what I say I'm booting. So, there's that... It doesn't do anything more than that. Assuming you're booting what you installed, you'll never hear a peep from it. It may add a millisecond or two to the boot process. I'm okay with that. Edited to...

Linux in 2025 could hit new heights and break through five percent in early spring

We've been claiming that X-year is the year of the Linux On The Desktop for like 25 years or more. But, it could happen.

Solved Can I get some assistance with a BIOS update on HP ProBook

That's rather unusual but glad you got it sorted.

CP/M, DOS, Windows, OS/2, Linux, Mac, and now... Linux???

If my memory is correct, MacOS is built on NeXTSTEP (which they now own) which uses the Mach kernel and BSD. It is still a Unix-compliant OS, much like Linux is POSIX-compliant.

    My interesting story

As an aside, I too didn't do my intro thread until after I was a moderator. Though, that was quite a bit less than three years.

Solved Can I get some assistance with a BIOS update on HP ProBook

Yeah, I don't worry about those sort of exploits. I might patch 'em just because I can, but they're not a pressing concern for me. I don't even care if they have to be on my local network. I'm gonna notice you sitting in the driveway and my nearest neighbor is so far away that some folks...

Solved Can I get some assistance with a BIOS update on HP ProBook

I will point out that you should read the release notes. Sometimes the BIOS updates contain security fixes. I consider those generally important enough to install.

Australia - The Land Down Under

In the US, they can't charge you extra for using cash - as far as I understand. However, they can give you a discount for using one or the other, which is pretty much the same thing as charging you extra for using one or the other. Because of credit processing fees, retailers are allowed to...

Crossover Music, Easy Listening, & Light Classical

"Please get out of the way if you can't lend a hand." In my youth, I'd go to protests and this was a favorite. It's also remarkably easy to play on the guitar. So, there's that. I was quite young at the time. There is some irony in that I'd later enlist in the military.

    My interesting story

I've done some work for the DoD. I served eight years in the Marines but would later work as a contractor on a few projects. In fact, I was on a Navy base on 9/11. My employee and myself were escorted off the base and weren't allowed to grab our gear. It would be just about six months before we...

    Install REMnux on Mint

That sort of depends. IF you have gobs of RAM then you'll load everything into RAM and (once booted and applications started) it will run quite well. This can be done with less RAM, but see the folks who use things like Puppy. Startup is going to be slower than even an HDD, but once you're...

Solved Two or more permission groups for a file?

Don't forget to edit your first post and mark this as solved. Heh... It's one of those "bear necessities of life"... (At least you'll know what I'm on about.)

Want to share something that I stumble across today

That it does it automatically is one of the primary reasons for using a tiling WM? Yes? No? That's the whole 'tiling' part, unless I'm mistaken. Well, one aspect of tiling.

    Install REMnux on Mint

With some effort you can make a 'persistant' USB version of Mint. It retains things like installed applications and settings changes and still runs in the live environment.

Australia - The Land Down Under

I'm not 100% sure, but I think businesses in the US must accept cash - but that's brick and mortar businesses only, of course. Our currency says something about 'for all debts, public and private'. They can put a limit on how much change you can pay with, but I think they all must accept cash...

    Open-source remake for Pharaoh (1999)

Keep in mind that I'm not a gamer and have done zero testing. This might contain the needed files - and it's 'acceptable' as it's at archive.org, which is recognized as an internet library of the LoC in the US. https://archive.org/details/pharaohcleopatrausarereleasealt The Archive is a...

    Open-source remake for Pharaoh (1999)

Also, is it possible to legally acquire those original files? If so, we could add that to the thread as a resource. Maybe it's at archive.org? They have a lot of old game disk images.

Solved Can I get some assistance with a BIOS update on HP ProBook

This. I thought I made it clear. (I've never needed to do anything with EFI for this process.)
