To answer my own question which may help others. It turned out to a kernel bug related to IRQ interupts. It is being fixed for all Asus Vivobook laptops here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216158 If you have a Vivobook not mentioned in the quirks, please ask the group to add it.
