    Better late than never!

You know what they say, you're only as old as you feel and that age is only an arbitrary number - My problem is that that I feel ruddy ancient, everything aches! I remember when I used to walk to work, now I have to work to walk! :p But in all seriousness, the warm welcome is very much...

    Open ports

Thanks @SlowCoder - Excellent call. I've just ordered a used copy from eBay. Am I correct in presuming that the one you are referring to is by Christopher Negus? There are plenty of PDF copies online, but I much prefer having the physical book in hand to read. This comes with age I'm afraid.:)

    Open ports

Thanks @f33dm3bits - I'm actually okay with 'ss' and netstat, although my terminology and explanations are way out - Sorry! I'm endeavoring to get in to the habit of refer to the man function to retrieve more information before posting questions on here - I'll be honest, I don't always...

    Open ports

As a complete novice I'm currently using the 'ss' command to manually look for open ports on my system. I feel its important to manually do this whilst I'm learning how Linux works. As my experience and knowledge with this platform improves I will create specific scripts to complete tasks, but...

Sort of new to Linux - want an easy to use, but 'very secure' OS with full OS encryption - advice on which OS>?

Excellent, I thought I was being overly paranoid for a basic testing web server. What firewall are you using? As I noted above, I was intending to deploy IPFire, but from what I can determine, it doesn't appear to be compatible with fail2ban.

Sort of new to Linux - want an easy to use, but 'very secure' OS with full OS encryption - advice on which OS>?

@1bit the double USB worked for me, although my server isn't a live server as of yet, the principle are exactly the same.. @SlowCoder talking of firewalls, I was considering IPFire on Unbuntu, can Fail2ban be used in conjunction or is this overkill for a basic webserver? Also whats your...

    What Is Linux

Great read @Rob and interesting to understand the philosophy around Linux creation which is evident in it's architecture. I think the appeal of Linux to people is more than it's basic command structure, versatility and ability to multitask, its the freedom to connect and share ideas which keeps...

    Better late than never!

Firstly a huge thank you to all of you who have offered a very warm welcome to the form! I'll be honest from the start, I AM A LINUX NOVICE, there's just no escaping the fact that my experience of using Linux is very limited, although I do have some which goes back over 15 years. Why now after...

Kali install in a virtual machine on W10

Sorry - I should've reported back. I'm pleased to say I figured it out just after posting my initial message. I had forgot to start the 'tor' service and had assumed the error was to do with an earlier issue. Once I retraced my steps I was able to eliminate what I had done or hadn't done as the...

Kali install in a virtual machine on W10

It’s appreciated, it’s very easy to try and run before you walk. I would very much like to do this the correct way and at least establish a basic foundation of knowledge before shooting off in the wrong direction. I mean I can do basics things such as deal with permission, interrogate local...

Kali install in a virtual machine on W10

Thanks for the heads up - Its always useful to listen to the advice of others - Every day is a school day, there's always something new to learn. Whilst Kali is new to me as is Linux in general, I'm not a complete novice, I do have some basic knowledge of commands, file system etc - I'm able to...

Kali install in a virtual machine on W10

All advise and guidance is very much appreciated. I've also installed Ubuntu which I'm primarily using alongside it. I would however very much like to configure Kali so that I no that I am secure. That said, you cant run before you learn to walk. Thanks Rob

Kali install in a virtual machine on W10

After successfully installing Kali in a virtual machine on Windows 10, I appear to be running in to some basic issues which I really should understand by now. Firstly when attempting to ' locate proxychains ' it returns the following message: /var/lib/plocate.db: No such file or directory. If...
