I have only ever used MATE with Linux Mint ever since I started using it, I tried XFCE once and I had the same experience with things missing from it that you would expect to be there and went back to using MATE again.

I ran "mate-screensaver-command --exit" from command line, logged out, logged back in, and it is working again. I'm not expecting it to stay running though because in about 3-4 days it will probably quit again.

I have the timeout set for 10 minutes at that point the screen should lock itself and the screen saver should start running, I've tried different screen savers and they all instead of doing what they should do they just go to a black screen and then I get an error in the ".xsession-errors" file...

I don't know what email clients all of your recipients are using but in Thunderbird all they should have to do is right-click your message and mark it is "not junk" and that should pop it back to the regular Inbox.
