    The most "windows like" Linux?

Hello Wiz, Thanks for the mention. I've been very busy in the real world as this Covid kerfluffle winds down, and haven't been able to play with Linux for the past several months. I've just loaded LXLE 18.04.3 32bit onto a 2.5 GHz / 4Gig RAM Vaio (it's a 64 bit machine) and it moves out...

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

Yes, and for that reason keep one machine with XP on it for just such occasions. A laptop, so equipped, can stow away on a shelf (just keep the ac adapter with it). Some do so anyways for retro games.

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

@Vrai "Actually it was driver madness with Windows '95 and then '98 which nudged me over the edge." I haven't been able to log in very often but here is a case in point on that drivers issue. Had been trying to wake up the WiFi card for an old Acer 5630. Under Windows 7, using straight driver...

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

Agreed, but have noticed a marked difference with respect to device drivers / device recognition between distros. The Ubuntu-based OS's readily recognized wifi, sound and webcam devices. The Debian-based distros are maddening, particularly older WiFi minicards. But yes, Windows and hardware...

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

Loren, here's an interesting aside, re: XP. I had been trying to burn a DVD and was making coaster after coaster with Win 7 CD-BURNER freeware. I still have a HDD loaded with XP for an old laptop. Swapped out the 7 for XP and used NERO and the copies ran through without a hitch. I'm sure...

    VERY interesting. Thank you!

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

Yes, I've heard great things about IceWM Then I heard about LXP, which integrates IceWM into it, and would be very interested in loading it. How do you load something with a filename like this? lxp-setup-0.2-1b One downside, of course, is that the last update I see on this distro is 2008...

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

You are right. 2001 was written by Arthur C. Clarke and the film done by Stanley Kubrik. If you look *real* close at my avatar, the 2000 is taken from the Windows 2000 logo. Clarke's HAL, of course, was an HAL 9000 (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) unit. Douglas Rain, a...

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

It's a tongue-in-cheek reference to both Azimov's (Arthur C. Clarke's) "2001" and Redmond's Windows 2000. In my explorations of Linux (or not-Linux), I've heard good things about AntiX / MX19 and BSD. I have also heard that Debian is 'stable' but a real b**ch to get to recognize devices with...

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

I agree. Right now dealing with trying to get Debian to recognize an older WiFi card. (Intel WiFi Card, C9063 WM3B2200BG). Will be wrestling with these suggestions this weekend, but really, does it have to be this hard...

Are you using linux? If yes, why?

Hello Captain, I've run into a med-tech who has clients in the USA and overseas. He tells me that *most* of his overseas clients still use Windows XP. FWIW. In addition, while casting about for a new OS (in lieu of Windows 10) I ran across ReactOS, which, if memory serves, is a Russian OS and...

Hibernation issue with LXLE 18.04.3 32-bit on Dell 700m

Thanks guys. yx_wh wrote: "I installed Debian GNU/Linux 10 on my Inspiron 700m and found the same problem. I edited /etc/systemd/logind.conf , changed it to HandleLidSwitch=ignore and this time it's OK." Actually, ^^^that^^^ looks very interesting, because not only is it about *stopping*...

GAH! "No such file or directory"

Thanks @jglen490, I've been busy offline and unable to respond. Yes, this makes sense: giving the computer precise directions to avoid misplaced files and apps. And for all, thanks for the instructions.

Hibernation issue with LXLE 18.04.3 32-bit on Dell 700m

Cool! I will be busy this work-week, but when the smoke clears I'd like to try that. Next question though: how do I edit this? Remember, Windows users generally did not mess with their Registry. For my own part, I did so rarely, cautiously, and backed it up before I did so. Thanks in advance.

GAH! "No such file or directory"

Fantastic. Thank you. I had actually been doing something like that on other testbeds, and I wonder if, during the OS install that I did not set myself up with root privileges? Because this time around, when I attempted to click on, select, extract the zip package, there is a box at the...

Hello Experienced Linux users, Long-time Windows user, exploring Linux here, now running Ubuntu-based LXLE 18.04.3 32-bit on a Sony Viao Intel Core i5 testbed. LXLE runs nicely OOTB (Out Of The Box), but now trying to follow the download and Command Line instructions found on this page: How...

Hibernation issue with LXLE 18.04.3 32-bit on Dell 700m

Hello Experienced Linux Users, For those unfamiliar with my current mission, I am reviving older hardware (mostly 32bit machines) with lightweight distros of Linux for donations to kids overseas (and I am told there is a local tech). This issue involves a Dell Inspiron 700m (1.6GHz Centrino...
