Which Linux are you trying to download? What is the URL?
All a mirror is, is a copy of the original site. Usually there will be a mirror closer to where you live, use either closest or the fastest to where you live.

a Mirror is just a server that the distro in question uses to up load or download it's software. They will usually to to find one close to you so the speed of the download will be as fast as possible. But that will depend on which distro you download.

just to add distribution mirror servers are perfectly safe to use [these are ones where the distribution server sends yo to, not a 3rd party]

Mirrors are fine....it means it is offerring you a place to download from that is hopefully closer to where you are.....so the download will be quicker for you

Some of the downloads you can get by downloading a torrent.
I use this method because it will scan the file for corruption etc....which means that you dont need to verify the file after download.
Which download are you trying to get ?....Linux Mint ?...fedora?....ubuntu ?....

Also, bandwidth can still be pretty expensive. Mirrors mean they can have you use bandwidth from those folks who provide it for free for projects or from project sponsors.
Those who aren't seeing the behind-the-scene views don't realize how much bandwidth can cost - especially if your download is popular. Also, not all bandwidth is equal. Some hosts are more reliable and faster than others. Then, there's locations issues. Countries l like AUS or NZ have high bandwidth costs when compared to the US, because they're island nations and there's a finite number of bits they can fit in the lines.
