I did the math recently for some question's comments on SE recently. Depending on which figures you use, there are 32 to 40 million desktop Linux users. Slightly less than 2% of the world's desktops, as your link also indicated.
 
The editors choice stats are really staggering.

The desktop stats make sense. I'd be interested to see what the stats were for the number of computer users who have installed an OS. Most people get a PC/laptop and when it doesn't work they get a new one.
 
Those are a lot of impressive stats (I'm not going to deny that). However, it still only makes up only 1.93% of the market share, even after roughly 28 years of existence, and despite the dominance of Windows and Mac being only one of the problems holding it back. Its going to need a lot of work if it wants to own 100% of the market share, but as @Nelson Muntz said in another post, "If Linux ever becomes mainstream, it will be another polluted MS product".
