Hey guys-:)

I'm on a hunt for a good text editor with a really nice GUI.
Something that will play nice with Kubuntu 20.04 KDE:-

I installed Visual Studio and playing around with it. So far it's ok.

After looking at Atom and seeing that it's more for dev's I don't want it.

I also had a look at Sublime. That's cool but also not what I'm looking for.

Are pretty much all text editors a command-line api in terminal mode?

***Please make reccommedation's on other text editors so I can find them online or in the repo's.***

What are you looking for in a text editor? There are many, many out there, each offering pretty much the same features with some differences. I use Kate, which is part of the KDE apps' stack, so installing won't pull in many things since must dependencies should be already installed. https://kate-editor.org/ Just launch konsole and run
Code:
sudo apt install kate
and that's it. Kate has some handy features I really like, and I'm pretty sure you'll like them too https://kate-editor.org/about-kate/. I even have it installed in Windows lol
Now, if you're looking for something simpler, Kwrite is a good choice too https://apps.kde.org/kwrite/ it's basically Kate without all the add-ons and extra features.
Code:
sudo apt install kwrite
Also, have a look here https://www.slant.co/topics/10214/~linux-text-editors, Kate is in the top 5 on that list :)

You might consider notepad ++. I like it as I am able to open large files such as a log file without hanging things up. Its my go to...

+1 for Kate works well on my MX-KDE Distro.

I'll install Kate later on today and give it a spin.
Thanks!

A nice light one is Featherpad. There's also Mousepad.

Hmm... I wrote:

Also with regards to Sublime:

But, if you just want a nice, light text editor, the first two I mentioned work well enough for me.

A bit late to the party, but just for the benefit of Alex and others, a couple of tips :)

  1. Kate is an integral part of the KDE DE, including Kubuntu, and was already installed.
  2. In Synaptic Package Manager, you can use the quick filter search field with eg "text editor" (lose the quotes) and get a list of both what is installed and what is available from the repos. My screenshot below illustrates, with Pluma (MATE DE) highlighted as available, but below that you will see Kate already there. If you need help with icons on status of a package, use Help in the Menu - Help - Icon Legend.
  3. Highlight and click an entry in the upper pane to get a description in the lower pane.

Most of the suggested editors above are listed there, exceptions are scintilla and sublime, although there are support packages there for them.

Notepad++ is covered with Notepadqq

Cheers

Wiz, and happy "Kate-ing", Alex :)

Actually, kate isn't part of the kde-baseapps pkg, but kwrite is, so you can install KDE Plasma in many, probably most distros, and kate won't be pulled in, unless you chose to, or if you install Plasma as a whole group in some distros like openSUSE or Fedora.
