TLDR (AI generated): The author runs a small business using multiple Huawei E397u-53 USB 4G LTE modems for proxy services. They face stability issues with some modems becoming unresponsive after days/weeks, requiring physical unplugging/replugging. Current setup uses wvdial for connection management. The author seeks advice on whether to invest in YKUSH tool for full power cutoff and reset, replace modems with potentially more stable alternatives, or find compatible modems that work with wvdial. They express frustration with current setup and seek guidance on optimizing reliability with minimal investment, balancing cost considerations with the need for reliable, programmable modem management.

Hello, I'm running a very small business, which is my own proxy server, it's not to get rich but to get an extra income so please keep this in mind to avoid an expensive setup. This server relies on multiple USB 4G LTE Huawei E397u-53 modems working at once, the system works more or less stable.

I'm handling the connections with wvdial, and everything works just fine, except that after some hours/days, some modems gets unresponsive and I have to physically unplug/plug them.

Some others works just fine when I reset them with usbreset. And those even works well for weeks without problems.

Yet, the defective ones became a problem. I found this option to fully reset them programmatically, because most of the time I'm busy at work.

I haven't tried it yet, because it is expensive for my budget (considering I need several of them and the shipment), and I would like to get some opinions before buying it.

I am thinking that none of the tools I have used so far, such as usbreset, uhubctl, etc, are able to completely cut off the power to the usb modems, which does not allow them to entirely reset, as it happens when disconnecting and connecting them physically.

So I considered buying the YKUSH tool, but before that I'm thinking if the modems are defective then it's better to try new modems, or other brand or model of modems that are more stable.

I don't need modems that work at speeds of 4G or even more, 5mbps is more than enough, I don't care about the speed honestly, mainly because I guess the operator knows when those sim cards are being used in these devices and limit the speed. So, buying 5G devices is just overkill and pointless.

I mean, I'm looking to save a little money with this. The modems I currently use, cost around 40 to 50 USD.

The thing is that most operators work with certain bands*, so I need to know how to find modems that are also compatible with wvdial, since most of them are modems that offer hotspot wifi connections and handles all the connection with the operator internally, that is, they only use the usb port to power the device, but do not allow the user to manage the connection with wvdial or other tools.

So basically I am looking for advice on which way to go. Handling the connections with wvdial is a must, because I need to change the IP of the proxies constantly to be able to offer a rotating service. But I don't know if there are better and maybe cheaper modems and I am complicating my existence with these almost obsolete devices.

* Bands
The device must support (at a minimum) the following set of LTE bands:
Band 2 (1900 MHz)
Band 4 (2100 MHz)
Band 12 (700 MHz)
However, for the best service on our network, your phone should have at least 1 of the following bands/frequencies in addition to the above 3:

Band 5 (850 MHz)
Band 66 (1700 MHz)
Band 71 (600 MHz)
For example, if the phone has bands 2, 4, 12, and 71, then that is ideal.

Any help is much appreciated, if it has any cost, I would really love to pay if I can afford it, of course! Thank you so much for any help.

I forgot to mention, if there's any other way to implement this, I'm open to suggestions, I'm willing to invest in new infrastructure to achieve the same result if the stability increases.

I already tried different usb hubs, so is not a power issue, everything points to the modems.

Btw, if you know any other place I can ask for this, I would really appreciate it.
