AntiX Live System

I'm trying AntiX live system, looks great! it works great from USB Drive, probably the best distribution of this kind, it has a persistent volume where you can save your changes before extracting the stick.

Helpful article, thanks!

I've always wanted to try AntiX just haven't had the time to do so.

Could you post a screenshot of the desktop, file manager/home directory and interface?

AntiX is my favourite Debian derivative. Very light on resources (designed to work on old hardware), easy to install, easy to use, almost nothing to learn.

Try it! Definitely worth consideration.

Thanks, my laptop is 12 years old now and MX was having issues last time I booted it.

then maybe AntiX is the answer :)
I'll read the instructions, find the time over the weekend and let you know.
Got plenty of thumb drives laying around now.

I've never run Antix from a USB stick.

I've always install and run from a hdd.

Antix is a neat little Linux distro and if you're willing to learn the Antix how to and Antix ways it's an excellent Linux distro.

It has always run like a bat out of hell on my Frankenstein builds.

I'm not going to say there's not a bit of a learning curve cause there is.

Create an Antix forum account if you want to learn the Antix Magic.

Each Antix distro is named after a real life person or historical event.

My two bits. ;)

I'm glad you liked my post, AntiX is great, you'll have fun!

Thank you,
I recommend you try it!

AntiX is excellent! I occasionally run it in a VM (QEMU/KVM) where it runs very very smooth and it is still installed on a 10yo IBM Thinkpad.

It has a place in my personal top 5.

Thanks!

Is it possible to make the interface dark?

AntiX is not very customizable I don't think you can make the interface dark. It is a live OS and I don't recommend to install it on the hard disk. I did, but my experience didn't meet my expectations: you can't install flatpaks, you can't install snapd, I had big problems with VPN (Mullvad) which never worked on AntiX.
It is not very intuitive and also has a software manager with outdated Apps, also in my opinion AntiX is not a very flexible OS.
AntiX is very light on resources, and that's very good.

This is my customised Grub Menu from when I have antiX on top of the ladder.

I have been using both antiX and its cousin MX-Linux since their 2014 editions and find them both to be great.

Is it possible to make the interface dark?

I don't have an answer for that offhand, Alex, but I can take a look next time I am in there.

Cheers

I don’t use Antix, the reason: I don’t like to broadcast the SSID, when it’s opened, I can connect, when I close it, the connection is lost.
Anybody know how to fix it ?

Thanks, I need to know when you have time.
I'm not able to have white backgrounds as they set off migraine headaches.

Anyway, the .iso is in my Downloads directory and the usb thumb drive is ready to go to try it live.
The username is demo-

Code:
a@mx:~/Downloads
$ ls
 antiX-23.2_x64-full.iso

This is sort of off-topic, but I hope you're aware of Sauron or Dark Reader. They're browser extensions that make the whole web have a 'dark mode'. They're pretty accurate but I find Sauron is better for most sites. Some sites just won't render properly in a dark mode, which kind of sucks.

I don't get headaches, I just do a lot of my computing in a dark environment. Even my study has heavy curtains that are usually closed. So, the brighter colors just scald my eyeballs and I don't like it.

Installed Dark Reader in FF as soon as it booted.

I need to be able to make the home directory and the whole interface dark as well.
According to Google I should be able to make the background in AntiX dark in the settings under Themes in IceWM.

Running it live on the old lappy is going well.

I can relate. I was just making sure that you knew about it.

It'd be great if the whole internet had a working dark mode by default.

According to Google I should be able to make the background in AntiX dark in the settings under Themes in IceWM.

I just did some digging and it sounds like that's only partially dark and it may only darken the theme and that sort of stuff. I've yet to find a perfectly dark system. There are always at least a few applications that don't obey the theme choices. I suppose if one only had a pure GTK system (for example) that might work - but that would severely limit your application choices.

Otherwise, I've yet to find perfection.

Oddly, Cinnamon does a good job at it. Linux Mint Cinnamon is installed on one of my devices and it's pretty good at giving me a consistently dark theme. I still have to change themes on browsers, text clients, email clients, etc... But, it's otherwise pretty good.

I used to get migraines when I was younger. I've grown out of them, thankfully. In fact, I've long since grown out of them. Migraines are terrible. Lots of people call a headache a 'migraine'. Good for them because little do they know... They don't want to experience a real migrain.

This is a pretty silly question, but have you tried sunglasses? If you wear regular glasses you can still get sunglasses in your prescription strength. You can use sites like Zenni to order them online and they won't cost a whole lot compared to what you'd pay at the optometrist's office.

Agreed, a dark mode for the whole internet would be great!

Yeah, I've tried sunglasses and well.....I can't see that well.
The computer glasses that I use are very dark and work well. However; any length of time on an all white background means hours of pain in a dark room if I look at the screen for more than 10 minutes.

The kind of migraines I get start with a zigzag line of colors in front of one of my eyes and vision in that eye is pretty much done for. The pain in the temples and at the base of the skull literally feels like someone has my head in a vice grip. The nausea is intense and trying to walk is a horrible experience. The migraine last's between 4 to 8 hours. Sometimes longer.

I'm glad for you David that you have grown out of them.

Like you, I haven't found perfection.... however, I did find a fix that our friend Jas taught me years ago.
By setting an environmental variable in the system you can bring themes into the app's environment.

I've managed to get Debian Mate, Devuan super dark by downloading and moving the theme to appropriate directory. Including the interface and the /home directory. With Slackware it was a bit of a beast for the applications but doable.

I'll check out Zenni later, thanks!

Thanks for the heads up on sauron. Just trying it now, and it's working very well.
Interestingly, the stats on the number of users on the dark extensions for firefox I've tried are:

sauron 669
dark background and light text 31,648
dark reader 1,287,027

At the moment for me, sauron is more effective than the other two. Time will tell as experience mounts up. :)
